Utility / Re: What's up with WLO Marine?
« on: May 25, 2023, 1024 UTC »
WLO was gone for a long time, now it's back with test transmissions at various times on 8788 khz USB. Widely reported on the RadioRef utilities forum and also mentioned on the UDXF forum.  No known solid schedule yet, so it's catch as catch can

Mike

Its return was first logged by me here on HFU which SIGNIT just referenced. https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,110909.msg354181.html

Not long after I made that post, I emailed Hugh Stegman at the Spectrum Monitor a few days later and he started doing some research and asking around on UDXF. He also said I beat the UDXF people by a little over a week.  :)

Just letting people know that if you want the full story on the return of WLO read Hugh Stegman's Utility Column in the current, May issue of The Spectrum Monitor. Apparently my logging was the first one and he mentions my email to him with the recording on the 11th of March but you all heard it here 2 days before I emailed him  :)

I copied this last night (UTC 8 April, c. 0400 UTC) and listened for a while, but never copied ID. But it was YL voice with marine weather at this frequency and mode.

Awesome! I'm so happy other people are hearing this. I was a little hesitant to post about it at first and didn't do it until I made that recording as it was a station which was supposed to be dead. I had thought they took down all the antennas and sold the transmitters so my mind was "how am I even hearing this?" when I first detected it on the Malahit.

I seem to have logged a marine weather broadcast from WLO this morning. I thought this station went off the air? I've included the IQ file for anyone who wants to put it into their SDR: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GSHsLkXAqfvXSc0VuDN4kQxeP6mBOwHp/view?usp=share_link

Heard the Four Seasons (i think) by Vivaldi here in Seattle with a faint signal due to local noise.

Picking this up faintly in Seattle.

After failed attempts to contact "Aleutian 1" the United States Coast Guard Command (CommCom) from Chesapeake, Virginia transmitted a warning to mariners to keep out of the area of military operations near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where they are recovering pieces of the Chinese balloon which transited the continental US and Canada last week. Audio included below:

EDIT: Also there appears to be some encrypted traffic on 5696khz.

TEAL71 a WC-130J Hercules "Hurricane Hunter" from the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron in communication with San Francisco was denied clearance to drop weather instruments.

San Francisco: "Flight level 290, Drops are per your mission, we do not clear aircraft to drop, you are over a Bravo airspace and we are not sure mission is clear to do so there."

This net has been active today. I recall it was active in the opening days of the war as well.
