i just heard Cobra 55 working San Francisco radio. San Francisco gave them a VHF frequency for Pappa Alpha Zulu November. not long after this i heard Reach 485 with a position report. i looked up Cobra 55 and it appears to be a USAF WC-135W "Nuke Spotter" aircraft. i googled Reach 485 and didn't come up with anything other than Reach is a callsign for Military Airlift Command aircraft.

Utility / Boeing 051 working Boeing Everett 5451 khz 22:00 UTC 2 Feb

looks like i have another Boeing Test Flight frequency. i was monitoring 11175 and saw a signal pop up on 11306, one of Boeing's HF frequencies. this was interesting because there is currently what looks and sounds like an over the horizon radar very strong over a range of frequencies 11306 was right in the middle of.

the pilot made note of that too and couldn't hear Boeing Everett well through it (nor could i). he said "Can we move to 5451 to see if that ticking sound goes away?" so i moved there and they performed some SELCAL checks. the pilot then asked "what UHF frequency would for you today?" Boeing Everett replied back 230.25 Mhz and they moved there.both were heard loud and clear on 5451 i do not have a UHF antenna otherwise i would have tried to follow them there.

Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this question but does anyone know what this signal is? It sounds digital but its bandwidth is very wide and covers 200khz of space between 6750-6950khz. It doesnt look or sound like CODAR at all either.

Very surprising to pick this up here in Seattle. I've never heard anything on this frequency previously but tonight it has been very active with Dakar Radio working various flights. Propagation has been great the last couple of days at my location. for instance i pretty clearly heard KLM flight 706 which FlightAware showed over the Atlantic almost halfway between South America and Africa. also heard Speedbird (British Airways) 251 and Delta 200 while they were in the middle of the Atlantic.

i picked up this USB voice communication between Boeing 298 and Boeing Everett & Boeing Seattle while setting up to decode HFDL from Guam on the same frequency. i just pulled BOE298 up on flightaware and am watching its flight: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/BOE298

Utility / Flightwatch, Australia 6541 khz USB 14:36 UTC - 30 Jan
« on: January 30, 2020, 1450 UTC »
Just heard several aero comms between planes and "Flightwatch". One of the planes called them "Brisbane Flightwatch" so I looked at my HF Aero Map and found out this is an RDARA (domestic HF aero) frequency in Australia! Skip conditions must be really good right now for signals making the trip across the Pacific to my Seattle location. I noticed VMC on 6507 khz USB coming in clearly and Radio New Zealand International booming in at an S8 on 6115 khz AM too.

I've previously heard their SSB marine weather transmissions on a different frequency but this was some sort of beacon repeating XSG followed by 3 digital mode (not sure which) tones over and over again.

Utility / US Air Force MARS net 4623.5 USB 14:32 UTC 15 Jan 2020

I picked up this net talking about windows software updates and security vulnerabilities in clear USB voice after passing what sounded like STANAG traffic (that jet noise whoosh sound).

AFW6T seemed to be net control also heard 6HB, 6HP, 6GO, 6RH, 6DK, 6LD etc all spelled phonetically.

Globaltuners has this as a US Navy MARS frequency no longer in use. Can anyone (Josh?) tell me what I heard?

ps: happy new year to all!

EDIT: it's a US Air Force MARS net

picking this up now at an S8 from my location with very little fading, almost sounds local.

i picked this up at an S7-S9 with fading at 13:00, still booming in strong at my location. i had no idea broadcast stations operated between 1710-3000 khz. can you tell i'm new at this? lol

Utility / Speedbird 247 working Dakar 6535 USB 01:09 UTC 9 Nov 2019
« on: November 09, 2019, 0121 UTC »
just heard Speedbird 247 in USB comms with Dakar Radio. Dakar told the flight to contact Recife on the same frequency. i looked up the callsign and this is British Airways flight 247 enroute to Sao Paulo Brazil. i could hear both the flight ok at an S3 and the ground station was just above my noise level. do you people on the East Coast hear Dakar often?

Utility / Hat Yai HFDL and Gander VOLMET on 13270 USB 17:50 6 Nov 2019
« on: November 06, 2019, 1757 UTC »
this is more a question about aeronautical frequencies which are used by multiple things. like i've noticed i can hear both the Hat Yai, Thailand HFDL data transmissions and Gander VOLMET at the same time. is this normal? if i can hear it wouldn't air traffic wanting to hear Gander VOLMET also hear the HFDL data? i presume most airlines have a better radio and antenna than mine.

Argentina 1135 (Aerolineas Argentinas Flight 1135) with a position report for Resistencia Radio on 9013.

i just checked and its a flight in the middle of the Atlantic which departed Madrid, Spain enroute to Ezeiza, Argentina! pardon me for being excited but i'm used to monitoring planes over the pacific and even indian oceans, this is the first time i picked up a flight in the atlantic close to the canary islands!

the odd thing is the frequency, i've not seen 9013 listed as a MWARA or LDOC frequency anywhere and its not on this map: https://www.liveatc.net/downloads/hfaero.jpg

edit: also heard Argentina 1303 at an S4 at 15:51
