I agree - the Kenwoods are probably the best sounding unmodified transceivers for SSB pirating. The Flex radios sound really good too in SSB but I don't know how easily these go out of band. I wonder if any pirate has used one?
There are lots of resources on the web for setting up Kenwood rigs for good sounding SSB. One bonus with more recent radios (like the TS-590) is that you can feed the radio audio directly over USB from your computer, eliminating a lot of the hassles of trying to feed audio into a mic or aux jack and having to match levels, etc.
Yeah, let's not do that. I know you are not serious but..
...just a reminder that TDOA or other efforts towards ID'ing the location of pirates is not at all compatible with the atmosphere here.

The #1 generator of wideband HF RFI that I have found around my house are "smart" 12v battery chargers/tenders. Specifically the NOCO Genius brand. I have a couple of these and they destroy HF with ridiculous RFI. Therefore I only use them occasionally to touch up a battery, I never leave them on a battery all of the time.
The 2nd worst generator of local RFI is undercabinet 12vdc LED strip lighting. The tiny switching power supplies they use are complete garbage.

I have this too, S9+10 in the Boston burbs. "Sunglasses at Night" by Corey Hart (lol) at 2040 UTC. I had no idea Corey Hart had a recording career. I probably did not know this for good reason. Radio Illuminati ID at 2047 UTC.

When trying to identify a suspected "pesky" transmission there is a rule of thumb that if the language is non-rhotic English and there is a 5:1 word to f-bomb ratio, these individuals are usually in the northeast, generally around coastal New England. These are also known as "Angry Bastahds". It's not clear if they captain fishing boats, or recliners. Very often found in 6000-7000 KHz.

Promised You a Miracle by Simple Minds at 1926 UTC. Peaks to S9 but moderate fading. Awesome to hear a summer time low-sunspot low-freq station! Listening on a TS-590 with a 60m dipole.

Got this at S8 with Springsteen after an announcement. Very variable signal, from S3 to S8 peaks. Good audio though and easy to copy.

Chris and I were talking about first radios. The first HF radio I had was something my dad bought used for me (he wasn't into radio, somehow I was directed to this by another ham).
We went to this dudes house, and my dad unfortunately took the bait on the most decrepit and weird radio on earth (I didn't know any better either). This radio had the following features:
- We purchased the radio used around 1989.
- Design-wise and functionally, probably dated to the early 80's, possibly a little before, maybe late 70's.
- All solid state.
- I believe it was probably capable of 25-30 MHz for RX and TX.
- May only have been SSB (not really sure on this).
- I *think* it had a blue cover on the top and bottom, and a typical silver faceplate.
- Physically larger than a typical mobile CB, but same kind of layout.
- Red LED segmented frequency display.
- Used toggle switches (I think) for up and down frequency agility, and you had to HOLD the toggle switch while it tuned up or down in either 1 or 5 KHz increments. I can't remember exactly but probably 1 KHz.
- Extremely unstable on both RX and TX, definitely suffered some kind of PLL unlock issue, and temperature related variations.
- Definitely was not a major CB/ham/11m/10m radio brand of the era. It felt more Ten-Tec then Cobra (that's not saying much probably).
- May have had a bailer of some type to tilt the display up when on a desk.
- It was a total piece of crap.
Can anyone, in the recess of their mind, recall what this radio was?
