« on: September 30, 2022, 2010 UTC »
New to me...

10 MHz experimental time station in Italy, JN53DV, with fast CW every minute and top of hour. Plays "Dance of the Hours" from Italian ballet opera “La Gioconda” by Amilcare Ponchielli, between pips. AM but modulates to USB like Canada.

Via Twente SDR, 30 Sept 2022, 0300 UTC
That li'l ol' DXer from Texas
Unpleasant Frequencies Crew
Al: Palstar R30C & various antennae
Snoopy: Sony ICF-2010
Roger: Magnavox D2935
(Off-air recordings.)

20:30 UTC - I tried the University of Twente Wide-band WebSDR and some KiwiSDRs in Italy with no joy in receiving the experimental JN53DV time station.

Good copy on what are most likely the pips from BPM with some interference from RWM if the filter is set to wide.

S9 with the Linkz KiwiSDR in the French Alps. Mode is CUSB (USB with full carrier).

1615 UTC-RTTY data burst
1616 UTC-Pips then Italian time announcement
1616 UTC-Dance of the Hours by RIAS Orchestra & Helmuth Brandenburg

Songs are identified with Shazam if needed. I usually use KiwiSDR receivers. Reception from my QTH is using an SDRPlay RSP1A for SWL with a 40 meter band Inverted V at 40 feet. Kenwood TS-570D for ham use.

Using the Linkz KiwiSDR 2

17:30 UTC - I can receive pips no problem but no announcements or music;
17:40 UTC - Pips appear to be suspended and I can hear some faint music in the background noise. Nothing discernible. It would definitely go unnoticed if you did not know to listen for it.
17:45 UTC - Some very faint CW being heard.

I'm not convinced yet that I am hearing the JN53DV time station.

I am no longer hearing it on the Linkz KiwiSDR. I do not believe this station operates regularly, it seems to operate sporadically. I made a recording of reception on the Linkz KiwiSDR.

Thanks for sharing the recording. Definitely not what I have been hearing but now I know what to keep an ear out for.

I've been checking 10 MHz via various online receivers this week and audibility of the little 90 watt Italian time station varies considerably with propagation. My best luck via Twente and other European receivers has been around 0600-0700 UTC.

It also helps to set the receiver to AM sync upper, or use USB mode. That helps reduce QRM from the adjacent station just below 10 MHz.

The partner experimental time station on 15 MHz doesn't appear to use the same data burst IDs or musical interlude, so I'm not certain I'm hearing the same station. It's barely audible, sometimes just a carrier.

14:58 UTC 02 OCT 2022 - Success. This is best heard using either the I1CRA/IZ1GLG, ITALY or IK4CIE, PARMA, ITALY KiwiSDRs which are both located on either side of JN53DV Time Station. Loud and clear with an S7 signal from the I1CRA KiwiSDR.
16:50 UTC - Now weak and barely readable on both of those KiwiSDRs other than the PIPs which could be originating from a different station. I am also hearing some other music playing in the background.
17:00 UTC - Receiving some CW and what appears to be a female voice (WWVH?) most likely BPM.
17:10 UTC - Loud and clear (S9) on the 13RF029 GERMANY, SAXONY-ANHALT, BüLZIG KiwiSDR.
