73 Magazine Index and archive
« on: August 11, 2013, 1916 UTC »
Magazine archives located at:

http://archive.org/details/73-magazine

Index:
http://www.qsl.net/k/kb9mwr/files/ham/73.html

Almost everything related to radio from the mid 60's to the early 2000s

Transmitters, receivers, amps, antennas and so forth. Worth keeping if you have the room.

I'm still looking for an archive of Ham Radio, (much more technical) if anyone knows of one.

Great find, LabView!  I was a devoted 73 subscriber for several years.  With QST always seemingly filled with construction projects written by PHDs, 73 consistently featured down to earth projects for real people.  And Wayne Green's often irreverent editorials were a great counterweight to the stodgy ARRL hardliners.  Always a hoot to read.  Thanks for the heads up!

Wayne was my hero. I picked my ham call (***NSD) in honor of him, W2NSD. The editorials are still a hoot to read and I've built many projects from the magazine. I have every issue of 73 on CD, as well as an index. I'm pretty sure that CD collections of Ham Radio are available as well.
Wayne Greene and Tom Kneitel made ham radio as a hobby an appealling thing.

I built one of his "Green Radio's" about 15 years back. Not a bad xtal set, seeing that you rolled your own tuning caps from two pop cans, plastic overhead slides, and some aluminum foil tape. (toilet paper tubes for the coils, of course.) Desoldering braid was used for all major connections.

As I already had 2000k headphones,it was all of two hour build.

The ARRL owns the rights to the HR Magazine archives and you have to buy the CD-ROMs from them...and they're not cheap ($150 for the entire set).

I got to meet NSD twice, both times at the Dayton Hamfest. Talk about arrogant! (but he probably said the same thing about me) One thing that no one could deny, is Wayne was *smart.* If he thought something was wrong, he sure didn't hesitate to point it out!

Do you know he originated the idea for the two year "Tech School?"

I heard him give a talk about "Micro Modulation." He walked right over to me and said "The future of radio is 'Micro Modulation.'" I just didn't see it, but years later it's called PSK-31 and a whole bunch of other names. He definitely was a smart guy.

I remember he published "Lifting Ma Bell's Cloak of Secrecy." Oh man - did he start something with that. They made him try to recall all those magazines.

Wayne has a habit of remembering things that either didn't happen or that he had nothing, or very little, to do with.  But it makes him interesting to say the least.

I remember that.  He published an article on the infamous "Black Box" and some other stuff, including circuit diagrams.  Ma Bell went ballistic and filed suit and made all sorts of noise.  Wayne then goes on radio and TV and says, "Don't they understand that, by suing me, they're admitting that these circuits work?"

Ma Bell quietly dropped the suits soon after.

Good ol' Wayne.  Larger than life.  I miss 73 Magazine :(
