Return of LORAN-C ?
« on: August 28, 2013, 1521 UTC »
I'm hearing LORAN-C on 100 kHz, first noticed around 1400z, still going as of 1512z.   It seems to be the Great Lakes chain 8970, with at least two stations noted.

It looks like the UK and South Korea are going to switch eLORAN on: http://www.sail-world.com/USA/eLoran---the-alternative-to-GPS---inches-towards-reality/112612

FWIW My Mac app MultiMode OSX lets you see LORAN-C chains: http://www.blackcatsystems.com/software/cw-rtty-sstv-fax-psk31-packet-decoding-software.html

Here is what I am picking up right now:

Nothing at all here at 2325Z. According to the USCG, LORAN-C was terminated on Feb 2, 2010 with no further updates.

When 8290/8970 were active, never had a problem hearing the Baudette, MN transmitter. However, never went in depth to see which other stations I could hear.

Since they fired up, perhaps its not as dead as they want us to believe. Turning it on now & then for testing for return to service? Testing for eLORAN? Other?

Hrm. Not here. Plus have an enormous amount of static crashes and other QRN there. Well, Baudette isn't one of the lucky stations...

I checked about 15 minutes after you and saw nothing. Loop was N-S so I should've heard Baudette, MN with no problems. I used to hear it well, at least before Feb 8, 2010.

I've got it right now, 1958z.

Now, I assume it is Dana and Seneca based on the GRI and relative timing. Since this is a test, I guess it could be two other stations masquerading as them, although that doesn't seem to make too much sense.

I cannot see anything for Baudette. It could be time of day, if these stay on I can try once it gets dark.
