6925 vs 6935 (or elsewhere)
« on: November 15, 2014, 2222 UTC »
With all the QRM on 6925 lately (the longstanding pescadores on LSB, who are now using USB as well) I wonder if another frequency would have less interference? Also several operators tend to be a little on the low side, closer to 6924. That means that the pescadores even on the LSB appear in the passband.

There's 6930, but since 6933 LSB is commonly used by pescadores, that may not be a good choice.

There's often LINK-11 around 6947/6950.

6903 and 6913 are used by MARS.

6935 seems to be clear most of the time?

What do folks think?

I'd love to hear more activity on 1710-1720 khz.  1720 is always clear :-)

1720 is one looooooong antenna.  Well if 6900, 25, and 50 are out, I was thinking since a lot of stuff is AM and probably crystal controlled 6975 since you can always shorten the antenna.  Maybe 6875 as the next closest alternative.  Otherwise let me know where you get those 6935 crystals.  I'd love to see a device you can plug into an ft243 socket that would let you tune some up or down.

I've always liked the little chunk of spectrum from 6800 to 6875. As 7500 to 7600 is mostly clear of broadcasters these days, there could be frequencies worth looking at up there.

That is one of the reasons I rarely hang out on '25, that and the fact that a lot of guys do have crystal controlled rigs and it seems unfair to squat on it with any regularity.  The Link-11 that likes to sit on '48 seems to come and go with the seasons and the whims of the president.  '75 is a good alternative, although CFARs like to camp out on 6973 from time to time.  I like the idea of 'moving south' although a recent survey of pesky activity found them all the way down to 80 meters, with certain 'watering holes' having more activity than others.  6800-6875 seems to be a good compromise, and most peoples' equipment shouldn't need much to get there.

I also like the idea of 1720, but your looking at one big antenna, and unless your on the east coast, I doubt many people would here you with a good signal.  Although, it is a lot easier to make power down there. ;)

I think all this speculation about other frequencies is healthy (thanks, Chris!). Many of us have been turning the dial around the frequency spectrum since the 7415 days, not to mention before that, no? I always scan from 6800-7000 when there's nothing on 6925.  As a listener, I like the idea of trying frequencies with less noise and clearer reception (hopefully).

Just a note...  Most MARS/FEMA nets are set to say (just an example...)  6975.5 usb  the .5 is something new since I was active...

just sayin'

Sideband stations tend to zero beat AM carriers BTW...  just something I have noticed over the years....  so if pesko is VFO controlled as I know they are... they just might zero beat that 'annoying' carrier on the frequency no matter where you go.

I have recently noticed a rise in pesky activity in what used to be quiet frequencies.  It used to be quite rare to see them north of 6940, but that seems to becoming common now.  Can we organize some sort of effort to log activity of the pesks from say 6700 to 6900 and see if there is a place they don't like to go, or don't often go?  I realize all things are subject to change, but it might be a good idea to have some alternates if activity doesn't slow in the near future.
