120 meters Down Under stuff - 3/10/2015 @ 1230 UTC
« on: March 11, 2015, 0139 UTC »
A nice opening this morning during sunrise enhancement brought good Aussie signals on 120 meters including big clear signals from V8LT Tennant Creek, NT. on 2325 kHz and VL8K Katherine, NT. on 2485 kHz.  The star of the morning was hearing flea powered Radio Symban on 2368.47 kHz from Leppington, NSW.  As far as I know these guys are 1kw max and this is only my second time hearing them here.  As before, they were just above the noise floor with Greek music which is much better than the almost imaginary carrier that I occasionally see on the waterfall during SRS DXing sessions.  I also caught a couple of new to me down under volmets on 2056u & 2201u.  I was hoping these conditions would trickle down to medium wave, but not so much...

All heard on the double kaz delta loop with stronger levels towards the north as opposed to the south, and almost non existent on the southwest aimed BOGs which I hardly use anymore for shortwave reception.

Thanks jFarley.  Conditions very similar this morning too with some trace audio coming through from Radio Symban.  Spring and Fall seem to bring the best propagation for down under stuff like this.  Meanwhile, I've been tracking a curious het on 1548.01 during this time which is only present on the North D-KAZ.  I suspect it's Australia waving its hand on the medium wave band.

I have Australia on 2485 at 1214Z with a good S9 signal. 2325 from Aus is S8. Not picking up anything else on 120m.

1242Z As the sun comes up, the signal goes down. 2485 is down to S6, in the noise and carrier is no longer solid.
1306Z Carrier is very weak and sporadic in the waterfall. Audio long since gone.
1323Z Carrier disappeared from the main waterfall completely. Still very weak on the aux waterfall.

03/15/2015 1138Z 2485 kHz is right at the noise level. Can see the carrier, get a lock on it and only hear a few syllables.

These heard around 1020 UTC on 16 March 2015:
2485 coming in nicely this morning on the 670 ft sky loop.
2325 also heard, but not quite as strong.
2368.47 carrier noted popping up above the noise floor from time to time, but that's about it.
