I saw the '75 tour. Zappa had George Duke playing with him. Captain Beefheart was the opening act. The main stage was set up about six inches off the ground on a riser and going up to different levels. It was festival seating. Frank had Capt. Beefheart was disguised as a janitor with a push broom for the panties. No one recognized him at first.

It was a hoot. Beefheart would pop on and off stage from the wings and the crowd exchanging looks and snide remarks with Zappa. Once the secret was out, he sat in, still disguised as a janitor and occasionally pushing away the panties and joints with the broom.

Did get to seen him in 84 doing 'Broadway the Hardway', at Wembley arena, most impressive.

There's a tribute act (I know Gail frowned on them, bless her) playing in the Cavern in Liverpool before Christmas and may attend.

The 'Muffin Men' are apparently quite good.

Got to see the Mothers 4 or 5 times in the 70's.  All of these were in larger Chicago venues except one, which was in a college fieldhouse in Naperville IL c. 1974.  The seating there was somewhere around 1000, and was far more intimate.  There were some panties a'flyin', but the strongest memories were of Zappa's fluid soloing.  He would sit on a chair downstage center and just let it rip for 10 or 20 minutes at a crack.  IIRC, "Little House I Used to Live In" was worth the price of the ticket.
