HM01 log, January 2017
« on: January 16, 2017, 1804 UTC »
Since getting an SDRplay, I have been able to use DIGTRX to receive the RDFT files sent on HM01 transmissions. Starting on January 3, I have tuned into HM01 every day (most often at 1700 on 11530 kHz, but sometimes other times and frequencies). HM01 is known to start it's broadcast day with the 1600 transmission on 11435 kHz, in which the repeated number groups change by one digit (e.g., if they had a number group 12345 previously, it will be 12346 today)*, and any new number groups and associated RDFT files are first introduced. All subsequent transmissions through the 1000 UTC one at 9155 or 12180 kHz (depending on the day of the week) broadcast exactly the same number groups and RDFT files. So the 1000 UTC transmission is the last of the HM01 day, and the 1600 one is the first of the new HM01 day.

* There's an exception to the rule. The first day a group is transmitted, the number group ends in 1. But on the second day, it still ends in one, and the final digit only begins to increase by +1 starting on the third day.

DIGTRX receives the RDFT files and saves them at .txt files, although sometimes they come in a binary format with .f1c as the file extention. To date (1/30) there are 25 unique files. 22 are .txt and three are .f1c, and are in red font below. I will convert the .txt files to .pdf and make them publicly available soon, and will update this post with a link.

I don't think I can convert the .f1c files at all, so I will instead make them available as is. They can be opened and viewed using Wordpad on Windows-based PC's. I will look into the possibility of opening them on computers using other operating systems and update this with what I discover, but anyone who might already know how is welcome to comment.

UPDATE 31 January 2017: All .txt files have been converted to .pdf. The .f1c files are now in this dropbox folder as well. Again, it appears that they can only be viewed on Windows-based PC's, so those using other operating systems may be out of luck. I will research that a bit more and update if I learn anything.

Thanks! I appreciate that.

So far it's still coming up blank for me. I have wondered if the fact that I'm using an older version of DIGTRX (necessary because the current version isn't compatible with Win7, which I'm loathe to upgrade) means that it can't decode this new file format? But then again, HM01 has been reported to transmit the sound of WinXP indicating that they're still on that system. Of course I don't know how long it's been since anyone has reported that. I personally have not heard any startup sounds on any HM01 frequency. I should try to make a point of tuning in right at the start of the 1600 transmission, as that seems the most likely time to hear it.

You may be able to put the 3.11 version of digtrx ( the one I said I use) on win 7 or whatever you r using and before starting the program...right click the exe file and put it as "xp compatable mode and see what happens

Also u could try this online shortwave sdr and sit on the channel there and see what happens...I believe the location of the online sdr is in the Netherlands

http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901/?tune=11635

Here's a decent number station schedule to use

http://priyom.org/number-stations/station-schedule

The schedule is in UTC but it's in 12 hr format instead of 24...and if u click on the channel that coming up in x amount of minutes...it'll send u to the sdr radio that I put in this message already

Thanks for those. I typically use American-based SDR's if I'm not using my own (which I can't at the moment - one of the antenna ports isn't working properly so I've sent it in to be checked out). Since HM01 is targeting the USA, it's usually a stronger signal than at Twente.

Anyway, I may try to see if I can get the updated version working. It would be cool if it does. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'll check that out. I still have the originals and can save them as PDF instead.

EDIT: Venom is correct, the links at Dropbox are producing something completely different. I have temporarily taken down the Dropbox link until I can get the files converted to PDF.

EDIT 31 JAN - all .txt files are now converted to .pdf. They look exactly as they should. The link has been restored above.
