8.918MHz HF Aero MWARA
« on: February 25, 2017, 0946 UTC »
Any one help with the allocation of 8.918MHz USB MWARA frequency used by aircraft as I am hearing Asian traffic on this frequency but listings from ICAO etc state this frequency is New York & Caribbean-2?

Aircraft ?W-133, may have been XW-133 but not 100% sure heard working unident female air traffic controller in very poor English, aircraft gave position report and timings, heard at 0835z.  Later at 0922z aircraft ??-120 also worked same unident female air traffic controller with position report then Selcal check.  Signals a five at best through storm static and their English heavily accented and hard to understand.

Also heard similar traffic early in my mornings on verge of Grey Line, at first I thought maybe Indonesia as one aircraft was heard calling with what sounded like "Ambon, Ambon this is Lima Tango Kilo over". 9
There is seldom traffic on 8.918MHz USB except for odd weak signals from New York when propagation very good.  Any info would be appreciated...Jack VK2XQ

Hi !

8918 kHz is also a Regional RDARA frequency for Region 6C which is:
"Sub-Area 6C.
From the point 20°N 130°E, through the point 04°N 130°E, to 04°N 118°E. Thence along the
border between North Borneo and Indonesian Borneo to the point 03°N 109°E, and through the points
03°N 106°E, 10°S 106°E, 10°S 141°E, 00° 141°E, 00° 170°W, 10°N 170°W, 20°N 176°W, to 20°N 130°E."

So Ambon could be possible.

Thanks Patrick, I thought they were Indonesian accents, or Philippines.  Ambon is right across on the tip of Sumatra so the flight may have been from Borneo to Ambon or vice versa.

Strange there is no mention of this on about six MWARA HF frequency listings I viewed on various web sites, including the regulatory body ICAO.  One of the many surprises that pop up when HF DXing.

Thanks...Jack VK2XQ.

Thanks for the links Patrick, have saved one to "favourites" for future reference.  8MHz was wide open this morning, heard Indonesia-166 plus many American accented flights, including American-83 etc calling New York but nothing from New York.

Also getting things weak on 8.933MHz USB too so another one to monitor as it's not used in this part of the world. 73 and much appreciated.  Jack VK2XQ.
