Some actual activity on 11m
« on: March 21, 2017, 2147 UTC »
The last few weeks, every time I have checked 11m, it has been dead. Maybe I've been checking at the wrong time of the day, because while it is not spectacular now, I am actually hearing some activity, at 2145z.

Almost everything is Latin American, except one exceptionally strong US station on 27025 (ch 6) that is splattering +/- 100 kHz.

Besides 27025 AM, what other frequencies did you log? Yes, including the Latin American stuff  ;D
U.S. East Coast, various HF/VHF/UHF radios/transceivers/scanners/receivers - land mobile system operator - focus on VHF/UHF and 11m

Sorry, I didn't formally log any of them. But I saw activity on most CB channels, as well as a bit of outband activity. A mix of AM and SSB.

Nothing heard now (1400z).

One thing that does not help is that the sky loop is way too large for 11 meters. It's 670 ft, or 206 meters. That's almost 19 wavelengths at 11 meters. The 48 mb dipole on the NRD 545 works a bit better for 11m. I am working on setting up an active loop antenna, perhaps I will get better reception with it at 11 meters. All my present antennas are too large for the band  ;D

Update: Someone on 27025 AM (ch 6) now at 1402z. Very weak. I assume someone from down south based on the accent.

Lol yeah there's actually a point where you reach too much antenna for a given band. A friend had a 600ft dipole, and the higher you went in freq the worse it got as the directivity narrowed until you could only send to stations off the ends of the dipole. Also, it would arc over at the uhf plug with any wind or snow. I don't know about you but I'd not like that to go on inside my radio.

11 meters is quite busy now. Nothing interesting, however  ;D

Re: Some actual activity on 11m? Sporadic E?
Sporadic E propagation isn't that unusual in March on 27MHz. Anyone hearing anything in the 10M beacon region (Around 28.397MHz, or WWV on 25MHz?
I was asked, yet another weird question, of how I would like to be buried, when I finally bite the big one. The answer was actually pretty easy. Face-down, like a certain historical figure in the late 1980's, (I will not mention who, but some of you will get it, and that's enough.) Why??? It would be a burial that will satisfy everyone: (1) My enemies will say that it will show me where to go. (2) On the same point, I can have my enemies kiss my butt. (3) It will temporarily give someone a place to park a bicycle. See??? A WIN / WIN for everyone.
