Bougainville & PNG
« on: May 17, 2017, 1407 UTC »
BOUGAINVILLE. 3325, NBC Bougainville, 0904-1200* UTC, May 17.
Wonderful to hear this station again, after a considerable absence.
Not many IDs given, but heard several "NBC Bougainville" IDs at
1022 and sign off announcement at 1156; segments in English and
Pidgin/Tok Pisin. Mostly poor, with heavy QRN (static). Highlights:

0904: New in English.

1000-1011: Usual PNG bird call; news in English.

1011-1022: Sound bites from a series of speeches.

1022-1101: Pop songs.

1101-1111: News preempted by announcer (monologue).

1111: Pop songs; John Waite - "Missing You" (I ainīt missing you
at all), etc.

1200*: Suddenly off.

My unedited audio of sign off announcement and pop song till cut off,
at  http://goo.gl/42ZyaH .

Most of today's programs seemed to deal with the upcoming national
election being held in Bougainville and PNG, in late June. Imagine we
will be hearing more SW activity from them as the election approaches.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA. 3260, NBC Madang, 1203*, May 17. Cut off
just after announcer said "Election 2017"; poor.

3275, NBC Southern Highlands (presumed), 1203, May 17. Only hearing
an open carrier here.

Ron, listening oceanside at Pacific Grove, Calif.

An amazing SIO 444 signal on 3325 at 1009z on 18 May 2018 with an OM reading news.

I am also hearing the same audio in parallel on 3365 with a weaker signal. I see some mentions of this being Radio Milne Bay , Alotau , Milne Bay Province , Papua New Guinea.

Hmm, and also a weak signal on 3260 which is listed as Radio Madang, Papua New Guinea.

Very nice reception, Chris. Well done!

BOUGAINVILLE. 3325, NBC Bougainville, 1146* UTC, May 18.
Second consecutive day on the air; as noted yesterday, this NBC
station does not carry the 1100 news; 1053 DJ in Pidgin/Tok
Pisin playing pop songs; local time checks ("5 to 10"); no break at
ToH; a number of clear IDs heard.

This morning, just weak carriers on all those frequencies. Glad I lucked out and listened yesterday when there was an opening

On May 19, found NBC Bougainville (3325) off the air, after having
been on for the past two days.

Also had 3260 (NBC Madang), 3275 (NBC Southern Highlands)
and 3365 (NBC Milne Bay) all below threshold level audio.
Even the normally semi-decent Madang was mostly just open
carrier. Have to wait for better propagation.

Cool beans! It may be time to reconstruct the low band loop that used to serve me well for the PNG stations. Now if I can only remember the specs I used when I designed it?

Greyline props on PNG's always amazed me on the thing. Get it on the right heading and they start rolling in about first light, peaking after about 20 minutes, then fade away over the next 20.

I once got Bangla Betar coming over the pole on 60 meters with it after months of trying. I still consider that my best HF DX catch.
