Windy 4102.74 kHz 1300 UTC May 20 2017
« on: May 20, 2017, 1323 UTC »
The newer format Windy beacon is booming this morning, 1300 UTC, May 20, 2017.  4102.74 kHz but with some sag, so I expect it will drift with either temp or battery voltage.

No wind in the High Desert this morning, no dits between the W's, it is sending:
W
W
W
W
W
TMP 74
B 127

Entire cycle takes about 1 min 31 seconds.

You can tell when the sun hit the sensor, temp shot up 6 degrees in under 5 minutes.

Coming in strong here tonight. 0420Z May 22.   4102.72

TMP 86
B 130

lots of dits between the W's, looks like a windy warm night.

I last copied this beacon in Feb 2015 on a camping trip to Death Valley, so weak almost imperceptible at the time. It's been many years since I last heard this at my home QTH.

Wow, it's been a long long time since I heard Windy... but hearing the W at 1019z on 23 May 2017. Very weak. Not hearing any dits after it, so not very windy.

I got in to work this morning just before 1400Z and turned the rig on to 4102.7 (yes, I'm one of the lucky guys with an HF rig at work).  Thinking that the sun's been up way too long for me to hear the Windy beacon, I just let the rig just sit there while I checked email, etc.  Low and behold, within minutes I heard some faint CW, followed by a clearer "W" pop out of the noise.  Time was 1408Z.

So glad to hear W is back on - it's certainly one of my favorites...!

Windy is putting the 2mhz "A" beacon to shame.  I seem to hear it most times of day. I can't decide if the transmitter is drifting +\- 5 Hz or it is some secret slow FSK

Currently 20 dB over the noise floor here

Windy putting in a weak (but good for Windy) signal at 1032z on 1 June 2017.
There's some wind this morning, I am hearing quite a few dits after the W.

Couldn't sleep tonight - at 1AM I tried the usual ham bands and they seemed all but dead, so I listened for some beacons.  Glad to report hearing W in the noise at 0740z -  some wind with the dits popping off at nearly 2 dits/sec; TMP 80 degs and the battery voltage 12.something (I think it was 128 = 12.8 V but copy was pretty rough...)

Narrow IF filtering on the IC-7200 sure helped.

This post is late but noteworthy, I believe.  Last Saturday evening (6/25 @ 0420Z) I was set up for a simple QRP low power / low effort activation for Field Day in my GF's backyard.  Her place is surprisingly radio-quiet.  Anyway, as I was wrapping up for the evening I decided to tune down to Windy to see how well I heard it.  Windy was reasonably easy to copy in the noisy summer band - dits indicating some wind, battery reporting 13.0V, and it was still reporting 102 degrees!  I listened a couple of times to make sure I heard that right.  102 degs.... sounds like a hot night!

All that week we had been running temps of 110+ during the daytime, the high at my place was around 114 deg F.  Most nights cooled off to the high 80's or low 90's, but the night of the 25th it stayed warm all night.
