Maybe W807 ? 1710 kHz 0030 UTC 26 Jul 2017
« on: July 26, 2017, 2231 UTC »
I'm testing a new app for displaying waterfall images from SDR recordings of MW, and I decided to look at 1710 kHz from last night. There's a carrier just below 1710.080 kHz that seems to have signed on around 0036 (unfortunately about when the SDR recording began) and went off at 0620. The carrier got a bit stronger around 0115 as you can tell by the trace. Or could tell if I was displaying timestamps, sorry this is a work in progress.

It seems to match fairly close with what I might expect from a station from Chicagoland. Any idea what times W807 typically signs on and off?

I get the impression W807 doesn't sign off.  I hear them fairly regularly pre-sunrise and throughout the night.

Have you been able to determine which of those lines represent the Hudson Co., NJ TIS station(s)?

I suspect the NJ TIS is the one around 1710.009, as that is generally the strongest.

If the FCC license DB is correct, that is the only TIS station on 1710. So what are all these other carriers?  ;D

The Hudson Co., NJ. TIS has more than one transmitter, maybe several?  I haven't looked recently, but I thought the FCC site had them all listed.  I'm surprised the other two on 1710 aren't listed though: the Flight 91 Memorial in PA and the Springfield Armory TIS in MA.

I had forgotten about those other TIS stations, and did not know Hudson County had multiple transmitters. That certainly accounts for several of the carriers.

I did some searching again on the FCC site, and it is showing a single transmitter for Hudson County, with 10 watts and a 15m tower. They sure get out pretty well for 10 watts.

Nothing for Springfield shows up at all, not on any frequency. I can't find the Flight 91 memorial either, but maybe the official town of license is not Stoystown.

Here's a plot of 1710 from last night. Yeah, it's large.

Nice plot Chris, there's a lot going on there.  What's the signal at about +.035 or so?  It looks strong too, and showing modulation.

I am not sure who that is at +0.035. I need to try nulling out Hudson Co and see what remains. Perhaps one of the other TIS stations? The ones not in the FCC database  ;D

There should be enough separation between the two that you should be able to recover audio from the UNID at +.035 without much trouble if you tune to 1710.035 and listen only to the upper sideband.

I can't find the Flight 91 memorial either, but maybe the official town of license is not Stoystown.

Found this:
http://www.theradiosource.com/articles/news-2014-oct.htm

That says theres one in Bedford and one in Somerset.

According to the FCC, they're both on 1640 at 10 Watts:

WPNX499 Bedford - Location 4 at 40-03-09.3 N, 078-30-09.1 W.  Has a 11m vertical antenna with 0.0 dBi gain.
WPVQ775 Somerset - Location 2 at 40-01-10.0 N, 079-04-54.0 W.  Has a 9m vertical antenna with 0.0 dBi gain.

Are those the two that you're referring to? I found nothing on the park's website or anywhere else that they have a transmitter on site. If they do and its federal property, would the NTIA control that?

Or from http://www.coradx.it/il-ritorno-di-radio-rebelde-che-scontenta-un-po-il-brasile-e-tante-pirate-log-di-dave-valko/:

1710 USA KID-761, Bedford, PA (Flight 93 crash site memorial TIS) 2028 usual info loop tape w/IDs. Massive signal since the BOG was aimed pretty much right at the xmtr/ant. Still not in the FCC database. (Valko 11 Nov.)

Well mystery solved. Partly anyway... one of the stations.

I managed to null out Hudson Co, and picked up what sounded like KIP761. Thanks to Skeezix, we figured out I am also hearing KID761, the Flight 93 crash site memorial site in Bedford, PA.

Not too bad of a signal around 0000z on 29 Jul 2017.

Of course there appear to be 12 other carriers on 1710 also.
