UNID 6964.9 AM 0023 UTC 26 Oct 2017
« on: October 26, 2017, 1146 UTC »
Skipmuck and I have been hearing a very weak AM station on 6964.9 AM at various times in the evening the last few days. Often in the 2200-0200 UTC period. Always just at the threshold of audibility, and when you can hear anything, it sounds like someone talking, although too weak to even determine the language, let alone what is being said. I've yet to hear any music. Perhaps a few seconds of music around 0039, like the kind you would hear on a news program between segments. But not full songs. Last heard 0211.

There are frequent breaks in the carrier, sometimes for a few seconds, sometimes for minutes.

Most recently I heard it last night on the SDR recording. With the recent uptick in reception of pirates from Latin America, it is certainly possible it could be one of them.

Previously there were reports of the "Bird Song" pirate from Europe on 6965, which this certainly is not.

The frequent breaks in the transmission (not fade outs, but sharp breaks as though the transmitter was turned off then back on) make me wonder if it is some sort of spur or other artifact.

Heard again on 27 Oct 2017 from 2259 to 2330 UTC. Again just barely there, not much more than a carrier. I did have traces of audio from time to time, which sounded like someone taking, no idea what language or what they were saying.

I noticed this time the carrier was very unstable, appearing to shift between 6964.6 and 6964.9 kHz.

The strongest audio was around 2325 UTC.

This station was back again last night. Noted with a few transmissions between 0114 and 0231 UTC on 8 Nov 2017.

Traces of audio now and then, not sure if real or imaginary.

Heard again from 2255 on 8 Nov 2017, until 2343. Again with several breaks in the transmission.

Sounded like there was someone speaking at 2239, but just below the level where I could understand what was being said, or even the language.

0138 utc

On a Santiago Chile remote on Kiwi SDR, I heard a spanish guy talking.
Signal strength was S9+10 and In the spanish I made out " Ochenta watts"  Very good audio quality.

Off at 0141, I had his carrier very weak and fadey here in CA. It went off at same time.

I moved the threads here. Based on listening to these guys on an SDR in Chile (and watching my local waterfall here to verify I was seeing the same transmissions) these are outbanders, or Peskies as we like to call them, not pirates.

Still, it is encouraging that we can hear these transmissions, maybe there are more pirates from Latin America we will be able to pick up.

Very interesting! I noticed that when I used an SDR in Chile I had good reception.

Quite good signals around 0200z on 19 Nov 2017, actually able to hear what they are saying. If only they were a pirate and not a pesky.
