Hifer Beacons Heard in Pine, Colorado
« on: January 29, 2018, 0044 UTC »
RF was Q5 at 2330 utc  with no FRC then FRC came up strong Q5...
At  0015 utc FRC was super strong...

OFF and on from 2330- 0000 utc both beacons were heard off and on.

I thought I heard PVC but could not copy an ID just could detect a very weak cw transmission.

Doty low noise antenna 9:1 transformer

Hi Tesla,

It is possible you heard carrier in place of PVC - in the middle of lots of radio tinkering, I switched in the bypass to the keyer to peak up the antenna tuner, and forgot to set it back to key mode.

PVC was sending again as of Sunday evening.

Feb 7
Time 2347 utc RF 13564. 247  Khz was copied and was very weak. No other beacons heard.
A new active region numbered 2699 is now turning into view off the east limb. It is currently producing minor B-Flares and also managed a low level C-Flare.  We might see an increase in solar flux and maybe some Hifers will be heard as well.

Receiver: Icom 756
Antenna Doty Low Noise 9:1 transformer  45 ft long  and 7ft above the earth.

Thanks for the report tesla.

Hoping to try some antenna experiments this spring. I'll update here and at LWCA if and when I do. I have a hankering to test a small tuned loop to look at the feasibility for a compact HiFER setup.

Woah! I must be doing something right!.  :D

Thanks for the report Tesla. I've been home with the flu this week and I've been turning off the beacon to listen for others. So far nothing although my transmitting antenna probably makes for not such a good (noisy) receive antenna. I'll try another listening session again today.

Thanks tesla,

Nice to know PVC is getting through. This weekend should provide some listening opportunities here in CA.
