UNID CW on 4330
« on: November 22, 2010, 0322 UTC »
At 03:38z: been hearing weak CW sig for more than 30min now, ,when sig strengthens I believe my Multipsk program is able to decode it with roughly 75% or better accuracy, do no think this is the 5 letter cut number groups of M8, which would usually be easy to ID. Are the frequent "=" sign indicative of any particular station?   Below is a sample, any ideas?  I defer to the spook experts!

This is not a spy numbers station, although it did carry the designator M22 for a while, but rather it is station 4XZ out of Haifa ISR, run by the Israeli Navy.  Along with this being a known frequency for 4XZ (actual center freq is 4331 kHz) you can see frequent IDs in the message you have posted, although many of them are somewhat knackered.  I assume that is the result of the decoder, because when I tune to 4XZ I normally do not notice such spurious characters.

This message is encrypted, and it does send 5 letter groups.

yup, it's 4XZ.  I generally tune to 4331 to see how propagation is to the middle east and usually hear VVV VVV VVV DE 4XZ 4XZ etc.  I think some of this is unencrypted weather data in some standard format.

The "=" sign is how the software decodes the morse BT ( _ . . . _ ) which is a break.  In phone, one would say "Stand by".  In CW, one sends BT.

It is encrypted last time I checked in some weird code, not like a OTP or anything. Typically comes in very nicely here.
