DGPS Logs 11-12 Feb 2018
« on: February 12, 2018, 1617 UTC »
Another amazing night. I got three Alaska stations, a first for me. I don't think I have ever received Gustavus before. Over 5800 decodes from Azores, and over 11k from Richmond BC.

Gustavus was here for two seconds:

Tofino is quite rare here, but a brief opening:

Chris, I heard the NDB beacon from northern Canada on 304kHz (+412Hz cw ID 'LT") very strong last night.
But never any chance to hear Alaska.... it should be possible, when Alert Bay, CAN (NU) is so loud... (at least 20db S/N ratio)

lets cross fingers for some good condx...

The BC Canada stations here are tough due to other, closer, stations on the same frequency, except for Richmond BC. I use it as my "beacon" as to how good conditions to the Pacific NW are.
Partridge Island, NB is on 295.0 kHz, which blocks Level Island Alaska, except for cases when Partridge Island fades out. There are no other DGPS stations that I receive normally on either 288.0 or 305.0 kHz, but I think there are NDBs there that block reception of those two Alaska stations.

I have watched the waterfall in real time, and noticed that even my local Annapolis station (only 82 km away) will sometimes completely fade out, which allows Angleton Texas to appear, even though it is over 2,000 km away. I suspect that occasionally there is destructive interference between the ground and sky waves that cancels out a local station (or of course two sky waves for more distant stations), and this is what allows another, less often heard station to sometimes appear.

This leads me to believe that phasing could be a very useful technique to null out one DGPS station to receive another, although it would require continuous re-adjustment of the settings. I have an AFE822x SDR with two antenna inputs I bought specifically for phasing experiments. What might be possible would be to perform the phasing in software, with some method of automatically nulling out the offending station. Ideally this could be done for all of the channels. The trick is coming up with the algorithm.  ;D
