Voice of Korea 9435 kHz AM 1300 UTC 27 May 2018
« on: May 27, 2018, 1302 UTC »
1300Z 35433 S7 Voice of Korea English Service.

Signal on 9435 is good this morning and not hearing them on 11710.

By the end of the broadcast, 11710 was coming in strong. Don't know when it started getting better as I stayed on 9435 until after the broadcast.

14:00 UTC, can hear them strong on 9435 & 11710 and weak on 11735, 13650, and 15245. The first two are beamed over this way and the latter three are beamed towards Europe.

16:00 UTC- 9435 & 11710 still coming in great, maybe a bit better than earlier. The three European stations are gone now.

I had a good copy of 11710 at 1300z here in Colorado. I recorded it so that I might be able to note the program better, because I want to QSL them while their signal is still good. (For three years running I've noticed that they come in best in May and early June.)

Haha yeah I could tell I was getting better copy w the changing seasons...I've only been SWL for cpl yrs.

But right now by coincidence I came upon DPRK on 11735 and I can hear their...totally awesome music...really well. There's a STRONG echo when they talk tho and I cannot decipher it altho it's English. Reminds me of the Cuban Lady echoing sometimes + the EAM echoes. 10:53z

•10:55z you kno what I just realized? I'm hearing a second station as well, concurrent...most likely •Radio Transmundial• 50 KW from Brazil...cuz I've heard them many times. Sounds very...interesting

11710 French broadcast; I can hear every word! Lol why? It seems like I always copy the French program very well...as opposed to English. I mean this is absolutely clear as a bell.

So hopefully the next English broadcast will be good copy here...I'll monitor 11710 as usual

•13:04z Wow! Imagine that. DPRK English clear as a cotton-pickin bell! So far. Introduced a song either written by or for Kim Il-Sung ...they have some pretty bad accents when speaking English.

•13:10 now the news is breaking up...fading away..

Yea their English is a little stilted...too bad I'm not qualified to judge their French pronunciation but I wonder if they can speak French better than they speak English. Hmm

A likely product of their isolation for so many decades. Few North Koreans may travel at all, and there are few English speaking countries that they're likely to go, so the ones that know English probably learned it in Korea, without the benefit of being around native speakers and having a chance to learn proper pronunciation. I've noticed that the female announcer is a little closer to the mark than the male one. He's the one who really adds that R to the end. I've heard him pronounce Russia as "rusher" before, too. I have to have a clear signal in order to understand him, otherwise the combo of noise and his strange way of speaking confounds me.

Haha! What confounds me is the supreme glorious glory of their style!

"The ppl of North Korea have complete confidence in the •Workers Party of Korea• and their Supreme Leader, Kim Jong-un!"

↑ha...they do? Oh! Okay, Winston Smith!
(SWL is a bourgeois affectation anyway...a running-dog tool of the capitalist oppressor)

Agree w/ everything you said MDK2, also have to add, these two announcers have AFAIK been the same for many years (decades?)... it's amazing they have anyone speaking English at all, so we have to give these two announcers credit for at least the "college try". Can't imagine there are a ton of anglos around to practice with. Also, you are correct the YL is far easier to copy than the OM.

As for style points mentioned by tRMZ, VOK has long been in a class of its own -- even since the 80's when stations like R. Albania gave them serious run for their money. For sure, anyone who listens to this station for a while will know the DPRK nat. anthem very well, which is what they play after the interval signal, and which gives the listener a relatively useless bit of knowledge that is interesting nonetheless.

Very interesting listening to this station in 2018 and reading between the lines (when you can make out what they say at all!)...

Yes. I found some old DPRK-produced documentary on youtube, going back to the days of Kim Il Sung (probably the 80s judging by the "Great Leader's" physical appearance, plus the presence of Kim Jong Il by his side - he had been designated the heir apparent around 1980 and started showing up at all the photo ops with dad at that time). And who was doing the English narration but Mr. VOK himself, sounding quite a bit younger but with the same telltale inflection and pronunciation.

I will have to look that up! So great it will be to put a face on the voice I've heard over the decades, LOL.  I assume that the non-professionals in the United States who actually listen to this stuff are fewer than fifty people. ;)
