Voice of Greece offline?
« on: June 19, 2018, 2113 UTC »
Hi all.
Voice of Greece is not online on their frequencies of 9420 AM and 9935 AM, i check the two frequencies on the Greece SDR and i don't see a carrier. However last thursday? I heard a carrier and weak audio for a few moments and it was gone. Anyone know why they are offline?
All the best Chris.

I don't have a specific answer, but I've noticed periods where it goes down for unspecified periods of time (days, sometimes a couple of weeks) and eventually returns to the air. Unless I hear or see some news to the contrary, I'm assuming that they'll be back.

I heard them not too long ago on 9420. And like MDK2 sez, they come & they go. No idea why, but I'd count on them being back.

I too noted an absence from 9420 a few days back, this is my go-to euro propagation beacon.

Now that I'm home, I also hear it here. Obviously not quite as good, but good enough. Very frequent lightning static (in the region, but not locally)

They are never on Sunday / early Monday UTC. Never. That's one consistency I've noticed from VOG.

In the afternoons (US Central Time), I tune around looking for them on the Univ of Twente's WebSDR. Sometimes they're there, sometimes not. I haven't paid attention to patterns.

I'll try to remember to keep a log of times that they're on & off, but I think its closer to random than some undocumented sked.

Good idea. I sometimes wish I weren't too lazy to log these things myself, because it would be interesting to see if there's a pattern aside from taking Sundays off.

Greece actually has a lot on its plate right now. There's the never ending debt crisis where Greek national resources and sovereignty are raped by the eu, the eu sponsored invasion wich is also a huge resource theft, and something that gets little airplay outside Greece; the fact Greece and Turkey are almost at war. Turkey flies warplanes and helicopters in Greek airspace on a daily basis, shots have been fired, etc. So keeping some little listened to shortwave transmitters going (much less their power bills paid) is likely way down the list of things to do.

The Greek debt crisis is far more complicated than that, of course.
