In fact, just now at 1512 utc on 11 March 2019, I am hearing them on 7000 khz LSB fairly well with intermittent group traffic, and on 6991 khz LSB, making "testing" monosyllabic noises.  The "group" though is on 7000 khz., with repetitive phrases and etc.  Based on the accents  of the stations speaking, Indonesia is the likely QTH.  There is a strong station "leading" the others at ca. S = 3 and numerous "replying" stas. at S = 2 or so, along with at least one voice recorder being used for playback.  The din when they "reply" in unison is pretty darned cool!

Yes, I recorded a video of the chanters via a KiwiSDR located in Jakarta, Indonesia. Very strange stuff!

This morning, at 1525 UTC,  they are at it again, on 7000 khz LSB, coming in like gangbusters here (100 miles east of the Pacific Ocean) e.g S = 4 and no fades.  Besides the "call & response" chanting, there has been intermittent low-fi musical bits included during some of the "response" portions of the activity.  Seems to be a fairly good-sized crowd "responding" to the "call" phrase(s) today!  I wish we had an Indonesian-speaking resource available to translate some of this material here on the HFU!  Signal diminished to S = 3 at 1532 UTC, and the "leader" is taking a break for a two-way QSO with another (?) unheard station.  This seems to be a daily routine, based upon my observation over the years!

I cannot vouch for the accuracy, but a person commented on the video I recorded of this same transmission at 7000 kHz with the following:

"They are talking in Indonesian (in a high level of respect) and some parts in Javanese, some parts "be aware," "be careful," and "we thank." It appears that they are performing mantras, to get barakah (Allah's blessings), but in the middle of these mantras, they are saying numbers. Very strange!"

Wow, the Indonesian Chanters are pretty, well, chatty this morning 18 March 2019 at ca. 1540 UTC!  They are on 7000 khz, 6995 khz, 6990 khz, and 7010 khz, all in LSB and all ca. S = 3 or so here!  The 7000 khz "traffic" was their standard "call & response" (per a previous post, apparently of a somewhat religious nature) but on the other frequencies it seems more conversational.  Very cool!  Although I have heard them above 7000 khz in the past, it has been well over two years since I have heard them in the ham band!  I wonder if they QSL?

I finally heard this superb "station" (or stations, or this station's friends) yesterday morning, out in an obscure valley far away from RF-noisy civilization. Thanks to Strange Beacons for the fine recordings, which inspired me to try again after failed attempts. Someone really needs to QSO w/ the chanters, not forgetting tape Echoplex, which would be right up their Strasse of the Ether, so to speak.

(No cell coverage where I was, either, and I didn't take notes, kind of an old-school spontaneous thrill.)

The (presumed Indonesian) weird chanters reappeared around 7000 kHz LSB at 1417z 9/23/2020. 5/9 signal here, the other stations I heard higher up on 40m were Pacific at the time and would support the theoretical QTH of the stations. I made a recording but it really isn't good enough to post here, but I suspect we will be hearing these very interesting stations again through the winter.

Well, the Indonesian "chanters" (or "Village Radio" users) are pretty active again this morning at 1340 GMT on 6985, 6990, 7000, and 7005 kcs.  They are usually heard here on one or two freqs of a morning but seem especially busy today!  Very, very eerie & cool when they get going!   Heard on KFS Kiwi-SDR and pinning the virtual meter on theBandung Indonesia Kiwi-SDR!

Yes, the first time I stumbled onto that frequency in that part of the world and heard them going stront, I almost fell out of my chair in my radio shack. The Indonesian Chanters have to be one of the most unique radio oddities out there.

Thanks for the report. Good to know they are still on the air.

The chanters are loud and clear most evenings here from 6.9 to 7.2MHz LSB and are on various Indonesian islands, some are radio amateurs as I have heard them using amateur radio callsigns in Bhasa Indonesia language.

Reason for the chanting is unknown, chants are various, many with village names being repeated over and over in the chant.

Quite odd, but they seem to take their chanting serious. :)
