I see somewhere that it was reported that 3.597MHz commences with a series of three "v"'s but the last three or four nights I am only hearing one:

"v 3JWV 3JWV 3JWV de QH4P QH4P" perhaps the formats changes at various times?

Can any one help with the new Roundslip for 5.858MHz?  I have the following but am sure the second part of the group is incorrect due to horrific noise this way I spent 30 mins on it:

09 Nov 1043z  3.858MHz  CW  "v 8FDH 8FDH 8FDH de 5JPK 5JPK" could be 5AJK or 5JRK, just not getting it out.

Much appreciated some clarification by any of the M89 fans about the pages... 8)

Thank you Ary, it was a tough one this way, SW crud, radar and general noise plus a 319-419 report with all the filters on the FT-1000D employed, thought I had a "9" in there earlier but dismissed it... :)

Hi,
Sorry if this is a dumb question but i just became a radio fan this week so i don't know much. But the frequency you guys are talking about is encrypted right because all i hear is weird static noise.
And i am using a free website for this http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901/m.html
Tell me what you think about it or if you have any suggestions for a better one.
Thank you

Greetings HB and welcome.

Numbers stations like M89 are only on the air for brief amount of time, usually only a few minutes. Unless you have an idea of the schedule for a station the chances of just tuning in at random and hearing it are small.

One of the best resources for numbers stations is Priyom (www.priyom.org). It will give you information about the format the various stations use - morse, voice, digital etc. There is a standard classification for the naming of stations, the M in M89 indicates it is a morse (cw) station.

Priyom contains a schedule of broadcast by the numbers  stations - well an expected / anticipated schedule since they are 'secret squirrel' organisations running them and they don't exactly publish schedules. Of course they don't always broadcast on schedule but some stations are more regularly than others, even if they broadcast 'null' messages when no real messages are sent.

There is a useful 'Next Station' feature on the Priyom home page. It also lists a 'target area' which may help you identify those you are more likely to hear ... or select an SDR in that region to increase the chances.

Most of the stations I have picked up in the UK are Russian (M12, M01b, XPB, E07) or Polish (E11, F03a). I guess U.Twente SDR would also be good for them.  I think I had M89 once but wasn't 100% sure.

Good hunting.

Thank you for your kind reply cj.
Thanks to you I have used priyom and already found multiple number stations that are very easy to find, as well as it schedule. I am very grateful for your suggestion and clarification. But one thing what do those numbers mean or the morse code?

The encryption/decryption key does anyone have it? Or is it still a mystery?

Actually, M89 and M95 are Chinese military stations and 24/7 on the air on many frequencies. See the numbers stations logs database for freqs http://numbersoddities.nl/ndb-2019.zip

Further info about M89 and M85 http://numbersoddities.nl/Chinese-military-nets.pdf

and no, the key is unknown :-)

For M89 and M95 you can better use web sdrs in the Far East or Western USA instead of Twente.
