Say it ain't so, Joe!

A century ago this week, eight players from the Chicago White Sox conspired with professional gamblers to rig the outcome of the World Series, enabling the underdog Cincinnati Reds — and bettors in the know — to win. The scandal, which was uncovered almost a year later, has come to be seen as baseball’s “loss of innocence,” the cause of fans’ diminished feelings for the game they once adored and a mortal blow to the nation’s confidence as it entered the 1920s, a  decade of disrespect for elders, contempt for institutions and worship of the fast life and the fast buck.

Watch how you talk about gamblers! Pro sports wouldn't exist without them. They're saints, they can't help if cheap owners underpay the players and ref's. Someone has to make sure those poor guys can feed their families.

Boy, Great-Uncle Arnie made a pile on that Series.

I always get a kick out of the public service advice that follows after gambling/casino/lottery commercials.  Usually it is something like, "Bet responsibly.  Have a gambling problem? Call 1-800 BAD-LUCK". How foolish!  The problem is not GAMBLING but rather LOSING.  If Al bets the doublewide two doors away from Amelia's doppelgänger attempting to pull a royal flush asking for one card, needing the queen, and does so - no one is sending Al away to curb his luck.  What needs to be cured is losing.

PS - So what you are saying Al is that without the Blacksox Scandal, there wouldn't have been the Charleston and Flappers - oh, the inhumanity of it all.
Tecsun H501x (broadcast received on this unless noted), Zenith T/O G500, Zenith T/O Royal 7000, Emerson AR-176, Zenith 8S154, T/O 7G605 (Bomber), Tecsun PL-600, Tecsun PL-880, Zenith 5S320, Realistic DX 160 using 40 feet of copper wire.  With apologies to Senator Gramm for his thoughts on firearms, "I have more radios than I need but not as many as I want."

Or the Harding administration. Women got the vote, elected "Pretty Boy" Harding to the White House. and made Prohibition the law of the land. What's that old Biblical passage? "Keepeth them pregnant, bare of foot, and working by the hearth"? If it was good enough for Yahweh, it's good enough for me.
