Neil Peart, Drummer and Lyricist for Rush, Dies at 67

His drumming was at once intricate and explosive, expanding Rush’s power-trio dynamics. His lyrics transformed the band’s songs into elaborate suites.

Neil Peart, the pyrotechnical drummer and high-concept lyricist for the Canadian progressive-rock trio Rush, died on Tuesday in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 67.

The cause was brain cancer, according to a statement from Elliot Mintz, a spokesman for the family.

Rush was formed in 1968 but found its long-term identity — as the trio of Geddy Lee on vocals, keyboards and bass, Alex Lifeson on guitars and Mr. Peart on drums — after Mr. Peart replaced the band’s founding drummer, John Rutsey, in 1974.

Mr. Peart’s lyrics transformed the band’s songs into elaborate suites exploring science fiction, magic and philosophy, often with the individualist and libertarian sentiments that informed songs like  “Freewill.” And Mr. Peart’s drumming was at once intricate and explosive, pinpointing odd meters and expanding the band’s power-trio dynamics.

In a recording career that continued into the 2010s, Rush headlined arenas and had more than a dozen platinum albums. Mr. Peart was also an author, writing books about his travels and his memoirs. The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. After a Rush tour in 2015, he retired from performing, citing its physical toll on his body, especially given his illness.

In a statement posted on Twitter, the band said that Peart had had glioblastoma, the most aggressive type of brain tumor, for three and a half years.

I can say with sincerity that "Ghost of A Chance" was one of the finest songs ever written....

Bob Mould was known for his "buzzsaw" guitar tone when Husker Du was at their peak. Here they are tearing up "Eight Miles High."

Anyway, I loved Rush as a kid and although they lost me around the time of the video that Josh shared, I always had a soft spot for them. I'm glad that I decided to accompany my sister (a huge fan of the band, I think she saw every tour starting with "Signals" in 1982) the last three trips they made here.

Very good drummer - I just could never dig their music - RIP Mr. Peart but you were no Keith Moon.

They're playing Rush during the bumper during the Houston-Kansas City game today. Nice touch.

If Geddy would have had his tongue removed, they would've been decent. Of course, I heard their mid 70's stuff, tone deaf buddies, they may have clipped his tongue by the 80's?

Don't compare Rush to Husker Du. "Something I Learned Today" is damned near perfect.

Ah... the local sports channel is playing "Blitzkrieg Bop" that will clear Geddy's whining from my ears.

'tweren't a comparison, more of what my idea of a buzzsaw sounding guitar tone is. Of course it was present all throughout Zen Arcade and their Byrds cover was done right around the same time. Maybe it even came out of the same session. The loss of that tone signified their change in direction even more than the fact that they stopped playing anything nonmelodic or breakneck fast on Flip Your Wig.

It's true that Geddy Lee is no Belinda, but you have to admit that "Limelight" is a fine song regardless.

One thing that always sticks out to me other than Neil Peart being an amazing drummer was the argument of the pronunciation of his last name. From what I remember it's of French Canadian origin and most of the Rush purest did say it correctly. Hard to type pronunciation out.
