The Haunting Call of a Fisher Cat
« on: December 29, 2020, 2335 UTC »
Excellent reception

2245 today - Heard this fisher cat from inside my house.  Recorded it screaming in my tree line, no video due to night time.  Frightening holler, almost sounds as if a person is being attacked, the neighborhood dogs react to it when I went out to record.  Very elusive animal, the only one I have ever seen was a dead one along side the road.  Indeed a fisher cat is not in the cat family but in the weasel clan.

It is one of the most unsettling animal sounds you will hear. We have a good size population here but they are mostly solitary so you won't see them in groups. They are a powerful animal if you see one up close... not to be messed with. :)

We hear them in the woods from time to time also. It does sound like someone screaming. A bone chilling sound. One passed in front of our car's headlights one night and got a quick look at him. A good size, looked like a big weasel or ferret.

Very cool. Apparently most of those in PA are in the SW corner of the state. Don't think I've ever heard one before this recording

Don't mess with a mustelid. The only one I've ever seen outside of a zoo or someone's pet ferret was a badger up in the mountains here in Colorado, just ambling along the side of an unpaved pass road. It darted off into the woods before we could get too close, but it was out in broad daylight.
