I can't see a USB port on it. :(

But look at all those knobs!

I saw one of these sitting on a table at a hamfest once. It was in rough shape. I thought it might have been a late 40's military transceiver? The wife of the guy who owned it was holding down the fort while he was off stuffing his face. All she could tell me was it was a military rig.

I asked Craig (the author of the article) if it was difficult to tune and what the sensitivity was like. His response:

Quite easy to tune, but you need to recalibrate the pointer to a reference frequency after band changes.

It’s not going to measure up to an NRD or Icom in the sensitivity stakes, but with a 10dB preamp ahead of it, It’s good enough for DX work.  Usual “warm” valve sound, and seems to ride over the noise OK.  I use it a lot, mainly for background listening.

Traveling Wave - Thanks for the YouTube link - most interesting!

My first posting here. Greeting all of you HF enthouisiasts.

For those of you interested in this receiver. Its after WW2 made by or licenced made by Murphy Radio LTD.

Its a HF receiver CW AM RT ans SSB (depending on model). 640 kHz - 30MHz used by the British+Australian+NewZealand Swedish and Dutch Royal Navy/admitralty/ airforce.  It weighs about 98Lbs= almost 50 kgs.

I am a specialised collector of these beasts. models are B40  B40A B40B B40C and B40D. Other receivers looking similar are B41 (VLF) and 62B more an entertainment receiver.

kind regards,

I always thought these were one of the coolest looking old radios ever. What a great rig. 100 lbs... no problem, that's what a proper shortwave should weigh :-)

This looks like some art deco office building.
