Telemetry is the automatic measurement and wireless transmission of data from remote sources. In general, telemetry works in the following way: Sensors at the source measure either electrical data, such as voltage and current, or physical data, such as temperature and pressure.

The remote source may be a fixed station or stations, mobile, handheld, portable, airborne or any other type of location, system or device, ranging from survey equipment to dog collar GPS tracking systems to drones (UAV systems, UAS, quadcopters, etc.),

That data is then transmitted via digital radio modes to a receive location. It may be a simple as on-off keying (OOK, another way of saying CW), FSK, PSK, MFSK or more complex digital modes. Telemetry is generally classed within the much larger signal identification category of "data" or "digital modes". Telemetry signals are found across the entire RF spectrum, including MF, HF, VHF, UHF and higher. Complexity, range, bandwidth and license requirements also run the entire gamut from low power short range devices / low power devices and and Part 15 systems to license free and simple license requirement personal radio services such as FRS, GMRS, MURS, the RCRS, PMR446 and so on to speciality services including the aircraft bands (aeronautical services) including VHF Data Link, the UHF ADS-B system (960 MHz - 1215 MHz) and hundreds of other systems.
