Buzzy buzzard:

Arnaldo Coro Antich, aka Arnie Coro, was a Cuban radio host, academic and popular amateur radio operator. He was a cofounder of Radio Havana. He hosted the English language Radio Habana show DXers Unlimited which had broadcasts twice a week. He was also a professor of broadcasting at the University of Havana.

His amateur radio call sign was CO2KK. In Cuba, Coro is considered "the guru of ham radio operators" and is credited for increasing interest in Cuban amateur radio operation and has garnered many fans in the United States. Due to the difficulty in acquiring radio equipment, Coro had managed to assemble his radio equipment from pieces of old radios, Soviet-era television sets and fax machines.

He died on Jan 8th 2023. Arnie was 80 years old.

Radio Canada International

2023-12-06T05:16:27Z

Buzzy buzzard:

A bit of a late comer to international broadcasting among the fighting countries of World War II, Canada set up the CBC International Service. It was later rebranded as Radio Canada International, RCI.

The interval signal used was the first four notes of O' Canada" on a piano, sometimes on an autoharp. A theme song, "Vive la Canadienne" arranged by Lee Gagnon was commonly used in addition to the start of transmission interval signal.

The main studios proper were in Montreal with the transmitting station in Sackville, New Brunswick. The Sackville station had the callsign CKCX.

Foreign language programming was based in Montreal while the English and French language external broadcasts were sometimes specially produced in the Montreal studios for external consumption. In addition RCI often relayed domestic programming produced in CBC studios in other Canadian cities or foreign bureaus.

Over the years, proposals for funding increases, and new languages and even an additional transmitter site in British Columbia have been floated. But changing technology and political climates dictated major funding cuts over the years. The end of shortwave transmissions in June 2012 effectively spelled the end of any effective way in implementing the mandate RCI was created for.

More recently, the separate RCI website was shutdown and became an internal page buried within the main CBC website.

Having lost the medium for which RCI was created for, its existence, while officially in still in operation, has been reduced to a token existence as a mere formality.

CFVP

Buzzy buzzard:

[[Image:CKMX Funny1060AM logo.png|right|thumb|200px|CFVP Logo]]'''CFVP''' broadcasts at a power of 100 watts on 6030 kHz in the 49m shortwave band. It re-broadcasts a comedy formatted station (CKMX) in Calgary, Alberta, Canada branded on-air as Funny 1060 AM. The fact that it often suffers interference from Radio Martí and the Cuban jammer against that station combined with its very low power makes it a very difficult catch in many locations. Often the mediumwave signal is much stronger than the shortwave one.

CFVP was believed to be the second last of such HF legacy stations left in Canada. The proliferation of HF relays stations was common in the 1920s and 1930s.

In 2023, CFVP owners, Bell Media, underwent a restructuring. There were mass layoffs in Bell Media's CTV television newsrooms and Bell's lesser performing radio stations many of which were AM stations. Rather than risk new investment to possibly gain a return via increased ad revenue, shutting down the stations was the option taken. One of the stations affected was CKMX and consequently CFVP. They both went silent on June 14 2023.
