A piezoelectric quartz crystal is used to stabilize and control the frequency of an oscillator circuit. The crystal is utilized to provide the resonant circuit that determines the oscillator frequency. Crystal controlled transmitters are often used by pirate radio broadcasters, and crystals cut for particular frequencies are considered valuable collector's items in the HF pirate radio community.
