As of the Ides of March 2011, the FRN was observing its annual hiatus/holiday, "FRN Annual Domain Expiration Day."

The Free Radio Network (FRN) is a website popular with pirate radio DXers and broadcasters. Most of the activity takes place in the Message Board, which is broken down into several sub-boards. The most active of these boards are "The Grapevine Pirate Shortwave", featuring general discussion of pirate radio, and "The A*C*E* Loggings" which is where loggings are posted.

Although the rest of the site is very outdated, and new content does not appear forthcoming, the site remains the hub for shortwave pirate activity in North America.

As of September 2007, the administrator of the site, Pat Murphy, does not allow new users except under special circumstances, although anyone can read the forums without registering.

Once a year, usually on the Ides of March, the absence of opposable thumbs among lagomorphs results in the FRN domain expiring until superior hominids click the "Pay my bills" option, using the ironically named "mouse," after which the illusion of control is restored to the leporidae.

As of May 25, 2011, the FRN was only intermittently available after a deadly tornado on May 22 struck Joplin, Missouri, where the website's server was hosted. Site owner John Cruzan confirmed by May 23 that he and his family in the Joplin area were not injured.
