United States

26 MHz/27 MHz (26-28 MHz) 72 MHz and 75 MHz RC frequencies fall under Part 95 of the FCC rules, Part 95 Subpart C: Radio Control Radio Service (RCRS)

It is important to note that many lower-cost children's grade RC toys actually fall under Part 15 operation within the 26.98 MHz to 27.28 MHz band (not to be confused with the 26.957 MHz to 27.283 MHz ISM band), but still use the same 27 MHz RC channel plan.

§ 95.731 Permissible Radio Control Radio Service (RCRS) use. RCRS transmitters may only be used to transmit one-way communications and only for the purposes set forth in this section. (One-way communications are transmissions which are not intended to establish communications with another station.)

(a)Control of model crafts and devices. When an RCRS transmitter is used to control a model craft or device, the RCRS channels in specific frequency bands must be used, based on the type of model craft or device being controlled, as follows:

(1) RCRS channels in the 72 MHz frequency band may be used only to control and operate model aircraft.

(2) RCRS channels in the 75 MHz frequency band may be used only to control and operate model surface craft.

(3) RCRS channels in the 26-28 MHz frequency band may be used to control or operate any kind of device.

(b) Telecommand. Any RCRS channel may be used by the operator to turn on and/or off a device at a remote location.

(c) Telemetry. Any RCRS channel in the 26-28 MHz frequency band may be used to transmit a signal from a sensor at a remote location that turns on and/or off an indicating device for the operator.

§ 95.767 RCRS transmitter power. Each RCRS transmitter type must be designed such that the transmitter power does not exceed the limits in this section.

(a) 72 and 75 MHz frequency bands. For an RCRS transmitter operating in the 72 and/or 75 MHz frequency bands, the mean transmitter output power must not exceed 0.75 Watts.

(b) 26-28 MHz frequency band. For an RCRS transmitter operating on 27.255 MHz, the mean transmitter output power must not exceed 25 Watts. For an RCRS transmitter operating on 26.995, 27.045, 27.095, 27.145, or 27.195 MHz, the mean transmitter output power must not exceed 4 Watts.

§ 95.771 RCRS emission types. Each RCRS transmitter type must be designed to satisfy the emission limitations in this section.

(a) Permitted emission types. RCRS transmitter types may transmit any type of non-voice emission that is technically appropriate for radio control use.

(b) Voice emissions prohibited. RCRS transmitter types must be incapable of transmitting telephony (voice communications).

§ 95.773 RCRS authorized bandwidth. Each RCRS transmitter type must be designed such that the occupied bandwidth does not exceed 8 kHz for any emission type.

§ 95.733 Prohibited RCRS use. The rules in this section restrict certain uses of RCRS transmitters.

(a) Simultaneous use of multiple channels. An RCRS station must not transmit simultaneously on more than one RCRS channel in the 72-76 MHz band when such operation would cause harmful interference to other RCRS operations.

(b) Data transmission. No person shall use a RCRS transmitter to transmit data. Tones or other types of signal encoding are not considered to be data for the purposes of this paragraph, when used only for the purpose of identifying the specific device among multiple devices that the operator intends to turn on/off or the specific sensor among multiple sensors intended to turn on/off an indicating device for the operator.

(c) Pay for operation prohibited. RCRS stations must not be used for commercial purposes. An RCRS operator must not accept direct or indirect payment for operating an RCRS transmitter. An RCRS operator may use an RCRS transmitter to help him or her provide a service and be paid for rendering that service, provided that the payment is only for the service and not for operation of the RCRS transmitter.

(d) Limited transmission. No person shall use an RCRS station to transmit any message other than for the operation of devices at remote locations. Accordingly, the transmission of other messages by an RCRS operator, such as voice, telegraphy, etc. is prohibited.

26/27 MHz 27MHz 26-28 MHz RC Frequencies

Class C (FCC Rules Part 95 Subpart C - updated Part 95 rules sections: 47 CFR 95 Subpart C, 95.701 - 95.899 Radio Control Radio Service RCRS) CB Radio have six channels allocated to general remote control.

§ 95.735 RCRS equipment certification exception.

Notwithstanding the general requirement of § 95.335, a non-certified RCRS transmitter that transmits only in the 26-28 MHz band and complies with the applicable technical requirements in this subpart may be operated in the RCRS for the purpose of controlling a remote device.

In other words, it is legal to operate a RCRS device on the 26.995 MHz, 27.045 MHz, 27.095 MHz, 27.145 MHz, 27.195 MHz or 27.255 MHz frequencies without FCC certification, provided the device complies with the applicable technical requirements as outlined in 47 C.F.R. 95 Subpart C Radio Control Radio Service RCRS for devices operating in the 26-28 MHz band 26/27 MHz devices.

§ 95.731 Permissible RCRS use. (specifically related to 26-28 MHz band)

(a) (3) RCRS channels in the 26-28 MHz frequency band may be used to control or operate any kind of device.

(c) Telemetry. Any RCRS channel in the 26-28 MHz frequency band may be used to transmit a signal from a sensor at a remote location that turns on and/or off an indicating device for the operator.


The 8 kHz bandwidth limit (95.773) and emission types regulations (95.771) apply. (a) Permitted emission types. RCRS transmitter types may transmit any type of non-voice emission that is technically appropriate for radio control use. (b) Voice emissions prohibited. RCRS transmitter types must be incapable of transmitting telephony (voice communications).

This means that any modulation type (emission) may be transmitted as long as its not voice and meets the 8 kHz bandwidth requirement.

§ 95.765 RCRS frequency accuracy.

(b) Except as allowed under paragraph (c) of this section, each RCRS transmitter type capable of transmitting in the 26-28 MHz frequency band must be designed such that the carrier frequencies remain within ±50 ppm of the channel center frequencies listed in § 95.763(a) during normal operating conditions.

(c) Each RCRS transmitter type that transmits in the 26-28 MHz frequency band with a mean (average) transmitter power of 2.5 W or less and is used solely by the operator to turn on and/or off a device at a remote location, other than a device used solely to attract attention, must be designed such that the carrier frequencies remain within ±100 ppm of the channel center frequencies listed in § 95.763(a) during normal operating conditions. RCRS transmitters transmitting a mean transmitter power of greater than 2.5 watts must follow the ±50 ppm frequency accuracy requirement as defined in 47 C.F.R. 95.765.

This translates to +/- 2.7 kHz for 100ppm frequency accuracy (2.5 watts or under) and +/- 1.4 kHz (over 2.5 watts) for 50ppm frequency accuracy.

The 26995 kHz - 27255 kHz / 26.995 MHz - 27.255 MHz frequencies may be used for data links, remote sensing and other niche purposes that the 72 MHz and 75 MHz frequencies may not be used for. See the HF pagers page for more information. These frequencies may suffer co-channel or adjacent-channel interference from high power CB radio transmissions. Per FCC rules, 26.995 MHz - 27.195 MHz channels have a transmitter power limit of 4 watts mean (average) power, and 27.255 MHz has a transmitter power limit of 25 watts mean (average) power. Remote control transmitters generally use pulse-width modulation (PCM) in the 26-28 MHz band.

The rules for the 26/27 MHz RC frequencies appear to contradict themselves at points. They specifically prohibit transmission of data, yet there are numerous FCC type accepted datalink and telemetry systems using 27.255 MHz sold and operating in the United States. Paging systems also use 27.255MHz under Part 95 (RCRS). It appears that data transmissions are de facto allowed on the six 27 MHz RC frequencies. Note that many lower-end toy RC devices operate under Part 15 26.960 MHz - 27.280 MHz and tend to use 27.145 MHz (Yellow).


When the CB radio band was first allocated as the Class D CB service, the 26-28 MHz RC frequencies were "overlaid" on the 26.96 MHz to 27.23 MHz 11 meter band. The original five channels were set to be 35 kHz from the band edges and 50 kHz apart from each other. 27.255 MHz has always been a special case, as it was allocated as the CB channel 23 and assigned as a RC channel for higher power purposes from the inception of the service. The CB channels were allocated starting with channel 1 being 5 kHz away from the band edge with 10 kHz channel steps, skipping the five R/C channels. Hence the "A channels" or "hidden channels" naming convention. It is because of this that export radios have the +10 kHz switch, turning the 40 channel band into a 45 channel band. While it is illegal to transmit voice on the RC frequencies, many CB and 11 meter operators do so. Using AM or FM voice on the A channels - alpha channels, hidden channels, etc. is quite common, especially with certain CB users and freebanders. In the United States, AM by far the most common voice mode, but FM has been noted in rare instances. Most export radios capable of transmitting on the A channels by use of the +10 kHz +10kc switch also have FM capability in addition to AM.

49 MHz RC Frequencies

RC transmitters generally use generally use 49.830 MHz or 49.860 MHz. Both 49.86 MHz and 49.83 MHz are referred to as as 49 MHz "RC channel 1". Children's RC toys are often offered in two versions, a "49 MHz" version and a "27 MHz" version, without any channel numbers indicated. The 27 MHz version generally will operate on 27.145 MHz. These devices are usually operating under Part 15, not Part 95 (with some rare exceptions for the 26 / 27 MHz gear. Part 15 power limit is 10,000 microvolts per meter at 3 meters (10,000 microvolts/meter at 3m).

Other sources, including R/C RC model hobbyist resources, indicate a maximum power output of 100mw or 0.1 watt on the 49 MHz RC frequencies. The same 5 standard channels listed below are provided as the available 49 MHz R/C channels.

49.6 MHz - 50 MHz (49.600 MHz - 49.975 MHz, 49.995 MHz) band (47 CFR 15.235 subband 49.820 MHz - 49.900 MHz) shared with military users and other Part 15 devices, including baby monitors, wireless microphones, 49 MHz walkie-talkies (such as the RadioShack TRC-503, TRC-512, Maxon PC-50 and numerous childrens-grade single-channel walkie talkies), intercom systems and first-generation cordless phones.

72 MHz RC Frequencies

The following channels are allocated to remote controlled aircraft, 750 mW 0.75 watt max transmitter power. From 72.400 MHz to 72.600 MHz, band is shared with operational fixed, business data link, telemetry and point-to-point links within the Business Radio Service

8 kHz maximum bandwidth, PWM, PCM, FSK (advertised as "FM"), various data modes. Both the 72 MHz and 75 MHz high-end RC systems are slowly being replaced by 2.4 GHz band systems. 72/75 MHz systems are still being manufactured and used, mainly due to the higher transmitter power and superior range offered by the VHF RC systems. High power 26-28 MHz and 72 MHz/75 MHz RC systems offer the best range with the highest transmit power available. 72 MHz and 75 MHz offer much better protection from interference and significantly more channel options compared to 26/27 MHz.
