Vostochnaya Zvezda (Russian "Eastern Star") is a shortwave pirate from the Southwest USA. It first appeared in early March 2023 broadcasting 24 hours per day on 4015 USB with a signal that was difficult to hear outside of the Southwest and was not heard by any listeners during the day. In late March 2023 it was first observed on a new frequency of 7325 USB. This frequency can be heard across the Southwest during the day and all of North America at night (with QRM from Radio Martí on 7335 AM). The music selection is varied but is often Russian pop music or pop music from other countries. It was first noted online by Radio Pushka, who has a very similar station format and location (but is not the same station). Audio is 2.5 kHz wide but slightly distorted with some splatter. The identification is in English except the station name (You are listening to Vostochnaya Zvezda, thank you for listening) and is rarely given (and seemingly not at all some days). The Radio Moscow Home Service interval signal is also played sometimes (also seemingly not at all some days). A short recording of a child speaking in an unknown language is frequently played between songs. No contact information is known.
