XM is a commonly heard signal which is a result of audio feedback. It used to be often confused with an actual station broadcasting the noise and was classified as an unknown signal/noise station. Sometimes voices can be heard in the background if the mic is producing the feedback to that XM broadcast. XM is made of low pitched repeating tones and never broadcasts the same exact pattern.

A popular theory is that XM Whales is a military signal (Unknown source): Several major military exercises, most notably Russia's ZAPAD exercises, the Joint Military Exercises with the U.S. and South Korea, along with the annual NATO military drills, were done on days when XM Whales was most active, leading to some theories that XM Whales is a form of military code station. The country of origin is still unknown.
