Distance Measuring Equipment. UHF band aircraft radio navigation system. Often used in conjunction with the VOR/VORTAC systems, NDBs (ADF, RMI), and the ILS. P0N emission type (pulsed).

DME provides a slant range (straight line from the aircraft to the DME transceiver station - often just called the "DME station" or "DME transmitter"). DME is a radionavigation device that indicates the slant range between an on-board interrogator and a ground transponder. There is a 63 MHz split (offset) between the interrogator and transponder frequencies. DME stations are often co-located with VOR stations, to provide distance and bearing information.

DME/TACAN Channels Frequencies are spaced 1 MHz apart, operating in the 960 MHz to 1215 MHz "mid UHF" band. There are associated ILS glideslope and localizer frequency pairs and VOR frequencies for some of the DME channel pairs - allowing a pilot to select a given VHF frequency and use the associated UHF DME.

Channels are numbered using an alphanumeric format: 1X and 1Y to 126X and 126Y
