American CB radio band plan. This is the same band plan used by most countries worldwide, including all of North America, South America, Europe, the UK, Australia and numerous other locations.

US regulations limit RF output power to 4 watts in FM mode, 4 watts AM carrier power and 12 watts SSB PEP (peak power). 4w AM carrier power equates to 16 watts peak power (PEP) at 100% modulation.

US regulations permit use of AM, FM and SSB voice modes. AM mode (A3E) must be full carrier double side band with a maximum bandwidth of 8 kHz. FM mode (F3E) is limited to 8 kHz bandwidth. SSB mode may be USB or LSB. Regular suppressed-carrier SSB (J3E) as well as reduced-carrier SSB (R3E) and full-carrier SSB (H3E) are all permitted, with a maximum bandwidth of 4 kHz.

CB radio service (CBRS) emission designators:

  • AM voice, amplitude modulation double side band with full carrier - 8K00A3E
  • FM voice, frequency modulation - 8K00F3E
  • SSB voice, single side band with suppressed carrier - 4K00J3E
  • SSB voice, single side band with reduced carrier - 4K00R3E
  • SSB voice, single side band with full carrier - 4K00H3E

Bandwidth limits are 8 kHz for AM mode (8K00A3E), 8 kHz for FM (8K00F3E), and 4 kHz for SSB. SSB with carrier (4K00H3E), SSB with reduced carrier (4K00R3E), and true SSB without carrier (4K00J3E) are allowed. Use of selective calling systems, including tone-based selective calling such as DTMF, ANI, etc. as well as CTCSS tone squelch (PL) and DCS coded squelch (DPL) are permitted.

FCC CB regulations require that all CB equipment has the capability to operate in AM mode as the "default mode". In Europe, FM is the "default mode".

The CE (CEPT) Europe-wide standard 27 MHz band CB radio regulations permit FM voice mode only (4 watt power limit). EU mode is identical, except AM and SSB are also allowed (same requirements as the US FCC CB band).
