KiwiSDR : why clicks on waterfall fail ?
« on: September 02, 2025, 0823 UTC »
I'm a user of the online KiwiSDR's, and like to click on a carrier in the waterfall to tune to a station. Sometimes, that suceeds, sometimes that fails. I don't understand why, what are the reasons.

When that fails, the other way is to click on the grey strip of the frequency scale. But that's not so good, as the cursor changes from a cross to an arrow, and the tuning is not accurate.

There's even a third way on KiwiSDR's : clicking on the waterfall suceeds only if the click is just on a 5 kHz step, not anywhere else.

I'm feeling that the behaviour is not the same on all the KiwiSDRs. But even on the same KiwiSDR, the results are not always the same, and I cannot find why. I suspect some link with the mode : AM, SAM, LSB, USB, but even with that idea, I can't find any rule.

Anyone knowing more about this ?

If you right-click on the waterfall, a menu will come up that you can select to have the passband snap to the nearest 5kHz on shortwave and to the nearest 9k/10k on AM, or to have it tune wherever you click on the waterfall.

If you bring up that menu and it says "no snap", that means snap is enabled and clicking that will disable it.

If you bring up that manu and it says "snap to nearest", that means snap is not on and the Kiwi will tune wherever you click it on the waterfall. Clicking "snap to nearest" will enable snap.
Receiver: Unlisted KiwiSDR configured to 3-channel wideband mode.
Ant: Homemade "Wellgood" 1m amplified loop normally kept in a fixed position (NNW/SSE) to keep 1500 KSTP in the null.
