March 14-15, 2014, Doubletree Guest Suites Philadelphia West, Plymouth
Meeting, Pennsylvania: The Winter SWL Fest is a conference of radio
hobbyists of all stripes, from DC to daylight. Every year scores of
hobbyists descend on the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania suburbs for a
weekend of camaraderie. The Fest is sponsored by NASWA, the North
American Shortwave Association, but it covers much more than just
shortwave; mediumwave (AM), scanning, satellite TV, and pirate
broadcasting are among the other topics that the Fest covers. Whether
you've been to every Fest (all 26, starting with the first year at the
fabled Pink & Purple Room of the Fiesta Motor Inn) or this year's will
be your first, you're sure to find a welcome from your fellow
hobbyists. More at

== Help! ==
Help! Any idea what this was: On 3 March 2014 at 0059 UTC, I found a
very strong AM signal on 6946.6; 30 dB over S9 and SINPO 55555. I
flipped to CW mode for a zero beat. There was no obvious intelligence
being transmitted, just an the AM signal. Flipping through FM, CW,
RTTY, LSB, and USB added no insight. I listened until 0107 and then
checked in occasionally through 0146. Still no change, just a very
powerful AM signal doing nothing. Thank-you for any ideas, Ron
Hunsicker.

Radio Free Whatever, a ``great block of rock``, on Show #225.
Announcer gives his address dickweeddj@gmail.com and says he is a
month behind on QSL requests from Dick`s mail (sp?) sack [snicker];
invites music requests. Two different voices conversing but not clear
whether it`s really one guy making two voices; but they do manage to
exclaim in unison at 0122, ``until next time, Do, Whatever!``, but
that`s a false closing, as then mentions that Mr. Spike of Red Mercury
Labs is a ``fallen comrade``, and dedicating a moment of silence to
him. Apparently means he died, rather than just got busted? But you
never know whether pirates are serious or not. 0123 repeats sign-off
as above. {Later checking hfunderground board, latest batch of Red
Mercury Labs logs were UT Feb 22 on 6935-AM, nothing unusual} (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
