KXNT 840kHz special broadcast before QRT 0645UTC 1SEP26
« on: September 01, 2026, 0308 UTC »
KXNT 840kHz in Las Vegas is going to go QRT at midnight 31AUG into 1SEP - that's in just a few hours.
A bulletin was sent to a couple of ham radio groups that there will be a special broadcast just prior to the permanent station shutdown. At 1145pm Pacific (0645 UTC), programming containing SSTV imagery and CW will air.
KXNT runs 25kW on a four tower array at night, with the lobes aiming SW (primary) and N (secondary) - hopefully a bunch of folks can hear the unfortunate last transmission of another clear channel going off-air forever.

Well, I tuned into 840 with two separate radios and my loop, and heard a jumble of KSWB, KKNX, CFCW, and probably KMAX. I recorded the last ten minutes before the hour struck. If KXNT was in there, I couldn't hear it, but I recorded it anyway.

First time I heard them was in 2012, on my Realistic TRF, early one morning during sunrise skip. After that I'd hear them periodically, depending on MW DX conditions.

Now the only Las Vegas station I can pick up -- poorly -- is KMZQ 670, in a very tight KBOI null. I've heard one of their sports AMers once. And the ranchero on 870 -- once. Harder to hear Las Vegas now on the AM band in the West.
An AM radio Boombox DXer.
+ GE SRIII, PR-D5 & TRF on MW.
The usual Realistic culprits on SW (and a Panasonic).
