Great opening to the South yesterday....AT NOON!
« on: December 27, 2014, 1717 UTC »
I was dialing around the x-band yesterday around 12pm EST / 1700 UTC and noticed some stuff coming in that usually isn't there during the day.  1700 WEUP-AL was coming in well and tuning around more I noticed some other Southern stuff was skipping in as well between 1600-1700.  1600 WAOS-GA was dominating the channel with no sign of usual WAAM Ann Arbor.  With just a few minutes before noon TOH I decided to make a spectrum recording with the Perseus.  During recording I parked it on 1540 since I was hearing religious programming, and I was hoping for needed KTGG Spring Arbor, MI.  I was surprised when the station IDed as WTBI South Carolina, completely in the clear with a decent signal, at noon!  Seems I stumbled on a good opening to the South with a pipeline to NC/SC.  Highlights heard here at noon include these relogs:

1170 WCXN-NC
1290 WHKY-NC
1310 WISE-NC
1350 WZGM-NC
1360 WELP-SC
1520 WDSL-NC
1550 WKBA-VA

And these new logs:

880 WPIP-NC mixing with WRFD
1010 WKJW-NC
1210 WANB-PA
1400 WEOA-IN
1430 WEEF-IL under WION
1540 WTBI-SC
1600 WTZQ-NC during WAOS fade w/ no sign of usual WAAM

These were all heard using the South D-KAZ.

Listening again today at the same time revealed a mostly dead dial with a few things skipping in from 200-300 miles out.  In other words, typical daytime skywave this time of year for me.

Thanks Refmo.  It was really strange.  Daytime skywave is typical this time of year but this was like auroral conditions in the afternoon where stuff from the South is enhanced.  Never had this in the daytime before.

I had no idea that you can get MW dx during noon?!

And I've been DX'ing this long yet never knew that? Man, where was I? Haha

During the winter months, there's usually a fair bit of skywave DX you can still do from a few hundred miles out during the day.  The unusual thing about this instance was more distant stuff was coming in from the South.

Ah okay, I oughta take a shot at doing some skywave DX. The grundig 750 preforms fine, so it should also do well with daytime skywave.

Nice!  You never know when the propagation gods will smile on you....

...and it always catches you off guard.

Not totally related to the main thread but close.  I was doing some daytime testing today on an antenna down on longwave and noted YPH Inujuak, Quebec in with a weak signal on 396 but definite ID at 1708 UTC.  This is 500 listed watts at around 1200 miles, and is a regular at night.  Several other common beacons in Ontario were also noted.  Also IDed 218 RL, 332 QT, 341 YYU, 346 YXL, 351 YKQ, and 382 YPL which for a brief period was on par with local SP.  Tents on 223 YYW and 224 MO.

Hopefully a portent for good things tonight?

Impressive logs - well done for the afternoon on the longwave band!
