Interesting article....as one reads it more and more, I think they are focusing on the FM pirates. The way Michael O'Rielly describes it, the pirates are nothing short of home-grown terrorists, infringing on minority stations, etc.,  etc., etc. and more etc. A rather long, drawn out vitriolic piece in my estimation........

His constant negative beat really tore the head off that drum.

I kinda drifted off after the fourth paragraph.  The gist of it is they want to change the law to encourage local broadcasters to seek financial damages from pirate operators via the legal system.  If broadcasters are really concerned about pirates 'stealing listeners' it's not the pirate that the problem, it's the broadcasters' crappy programming.  Part of me thinks this is the dying breath of an industry that is struggling to stay relevant in this digital age.  Now, more than ever, you can't program 16 stations coast to coast with the same log, the same three voicetracked jocks, and the same 5 songs.

Pirate radio is not a scourge. Nor is it an act of terrorism. It's people talking and playing music.

Well you know my stance. But man, the anger inside of me whilst reading this is boiling to unhealthy levels.

So, lets cut to the quick here....Mr. O'Reilly wants to privatize what would normally be the function of the FCC in regards to ferreting out this abominable ( ;)) practice of illicit broadcasting. But the ability to do this will be in the hands of the broadcasters, the NAB, and their lawyers. The public will not have a say in the matter. All I can say is that money talks and bullshit walks.

One more thing...Dictionary.com defines "scourge" as: a whip or lash, especially for the infliction of punishment or torture. 2. a person or thing that applies or administers punishment or severe criticism. 3. a cause of affliction or calamity: Really O'Rielly? So the poor suffering folks at Clear Channel, having undergone such devastating trauma will seek damages in the courts and get to administer the 50 lashes....so the NAB becomes the scourge...by definition of course...

I feel your pain.

Since an FCC commissioner now seems to be advocating for vigilante justice against pirate stations, I've been musing about how the principles of 'stand your ground' laws might be invoked against the agents of a rogue out-of-control fascist government agency...

Keep your eye on Florida! It has both an anti-pirate law on the books and a "stand your ground" law.
