CTA Riders Complained Of Dropped Calls Before Arrest Of Alleged Cell Phone Jammer

A crotchety Chicago man who became notorious among commuters for riding the train with a cellphone jammer and a six-pack of beer now faces felony charges for using the signal-blocking device to get some peace on his way home.

Dennis Nicholl, 63, faces felony charges of interfering with cellphone calls using a signal jamming device on the CTA Red Line in Chicago, Illinois.

Dennis Nicholl was arrested Tuesday for using a cellphone jammer on the metro because “he was disturbed by people talking around him,” his attorney, Charles Lauer, told the Chicago Tribune.

The 63-year-old financial planner for the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System had become well-known among commuters on Chicago’s Red Line railway who noticed their calls would drop around the bulky, antennaed device on Nicholl's lap.

Some commuters also noticed a six-pack of Old Style beer at his feet, as seen in photos that circulated online for months.

Nicholl was finally busted after undercover officers set up a sting operation and deployed a plainclothes cop to commute alongside him.

The inconspicuous cop made a phone call and, when it dropped after Nicholl turned on his device, he handcuffed him at the next stop.

Nicholl admitted to police that he “gets annoyed at people talking on their cellphones while riding on” Chicago’s transit system, according to the police report.

Cellphone jammers violate federal law and can disrupt all phone or radio signals in their immediate surroundings, causing calls to suddenly drop. People who use or sell them in the U.S. can face prison time and significant fines — up to $16,000 for each violation, according to the FCC.
It's illegal to use cellphone jammers in public and can lead to hefty fines up to $16,000 per violation or prison time.

The judge on Nicholl's case dubbed the cantankerous commuter the “cellphone police” and set a hefty $10,000 bail.

Nicholl's lawyer said the man was harmless and just trying to get some peace and quiet on his ride home.

“He might have been selfish in thinking about himself, but he didn’t have any malicious intent,” Lauer said.

Nicholl posted bond and left jail Wednesday.

Another American Hero jailed by the evil telcomm industry! The man should be given a medal, nay, a medal and a grant to spread his methods nationwide! Not mention being able to afford better beer.

Al, why aren't you involved in this vital movement instead of just posting about it? Where's the old Fansome sense of outrage over such injustice?

By George Zeller's tattered snowsuit, this is wrong! It is wrong!

                                          >:(  "Crotchety"  >:(  At 63?! I have never used that word before. If it were me I'd use ear plugs or ear buds & listen to music. I found a pair of ear buds walking to the library a couple of days ago on the side of the street. So I take them to the library & log on to youtube & check for quality of reproduction. Not bad, almost as good as my Sennheiser pair. Check out this chick:    www.youtube.com/watch?v=6U34i6CqsF4

You can buy them online the problem is getting them thru customs. Many times they will slip thru as customs can't check every single thing from overseas. China sells tons of them.

The last time I looked they were selling for well under 100 bucks on Ebay.

The same type of set-up exists for Americans wanting Cuban cigars, but not on Ebay, tobacco is "evil" there. Legit dealers of Cuban cigars in Europe, Asia, and Australia are glad to serve the needs of Americans. Many guarantee delivery. If your cigars are nabbed by Customs, they send a replacement box. Al Gore inventing the internet was a boon for American cigar smokers. Cuban cigars at retail prices from legit dealers. No more getting stuck with a 500 buck box of fake Bolivars from behind the counter at the local smoke shop.

Sometimes I think the entire economies of the Netherlands and Canada are based on selling little packets of 10 cannabis seeds under weird names at 50 plus bucks and up a packet to gullible American stoners. They seem to use the same rules as the cigar guys.

I've seen tons of them online as well, but some of the cheaper ones have bad reviews from people saying they don't work very well or are very short range.  Some of the better reviewed ones I've seen are $200-$300 and promise they can jam all bands and the sellers even promise to refund your money if it doesn't get through customs.  Haven't tried it yet but I've been tempted.  Sort of a no-risk offer if they are honest sellers.  I live in a state where using your cell phone while driving is illegal and yet I still see people every day damned near driving off the road because they're blabbing on the things.  I always wanted to get a jammer and place it on my dashboard so I could block everyone's phone within a few lanes of me.  But hell, that might cause more accidents with those numbskulls looking down at their phone trying to figure out why they just dropped a call.   ;D

There have actually been a couple of court cases involving theaters using them in house. It seems the jackass yapping next to you on his phone through the movie has a right to do so. Of course, you still have the right to ask that they be removed.

Another yahoo was causing a ruckus about lack of independent cell and wireless service in hotels in Nashville a few years back due to in-hotel jamming. He's the same guy who wants all penguins banned from US territory. My guess is the poor wretch is beset by brain bubbles.
