Russia briefly detains, deports US broadcasting chief

WASHINGTON (AP) — Russian authorities briefly detained and then deported the chief of the board that oversees U.S. government broadcasting overseas, including the Voice of America and Radio Free Europe, the agency said Wednesday, the latest move amid heightening friction between Washington and Moscow.

so does this mean the new type of "cold war" stuff from the 70's & 80's is now going to be through the internet instead of shortwave ?
because it sure looks to me like the tensions building up is leading to another one.
i sure do miss those "cold war" days of stuff on shortwave back then.

True, last I checked Russia Today (cleverly rebranded as RT to sound innocuous) is still on Galaxy 19 KU.  I used to get a hoot out of some of the stuff they put up there.  I think FTA is the shortwave of the 21st century, just as unknown to the average joe.

VOA has been a thorn in the side of Russia and China for ages. Also, there's been some recent diplomat expulsions in both the US and Russia. One side kicks someone out, then other side then gets to figure out the most worthy eviction candidate as a reprisal.

I remember just after the collapse of the Soviet Union when the new owners of the old Govt. TV monopolies couldn't get a strong enough audio signal to go the with video one on domestic TV broadcasts. They resorted to putting very good looking half naked women on the newscasts to hold an audience. Some Stateside character swiped the idea, added sound, and "Naked News" was born.
