WRCR 1700 Off Air?
« on: October 25, 2016, 1852 UTC »
I am hearing the Arlington, VA TIS on 1700. No sign of WRCR, or their horrible IBOC QRM.

I do have something way down there that could be commercial, so if they are on the air, perhaps they are running on low power?

OK, I found their streaming site, and it does sound like them, but they are very weak. Hopefully they stay that way as long as possible  ;D

Update: A stronger signal from WRCR at 1902z, but still no sign of IBOC. No, strike that, I can start to see the IBOC now, but it is still weak. I'm not sure if the station is operating on lower power, or if this is due to the propagation conditions, the K index is 6 right now.  I can still hear the Arlington TIS, which is dominant at times.

I check hamqsl, and the propagation conditions are poor at the moment. Maybe that why it is weak.

I heard them about a month ago. Here it's either the preachers in Alabama or later at night the ESPN station from South Texas. Brownsville I believe, but it may be Corpus Christie.

Props were excellent last night with low noise. I heard both the Alabama and Texas station a little before 6 UTC. No IBOC noise present but there was a faint pop music station in there on the bearing I normally hear both the TX. station and WRCR on the backside.

I wonder if they gave up on IBOC? The music I heard from the unid matched the format of WRCR without the IBOC related racket.

Good news, the IBOC seems to be gone, as well!

http://www.wrcr.com/2016/11/14/wrcr-com-full-time-streaming-tuesday/

WRCR 1700AM, majority owned and operated by Alexander Broadcasting, Inc. is making its most popular local programs, including “The Steve & Jordan Show”, exclusive to the Internet and mobile apps starting Tuesday, November 15th. Additional original locally-produced programming, including “The Bigger Picture,” “Live Song Radio with Brian Muni.” “Who Wants to Be a Volunteer?” and others, currently heard on WRCR 1700AM, will be available exclusively as a web-stream from WRCR’s website and via mobile apps, also available through WRCR’s website. Local weather and up-to-the-minute traffic reports will still be available from WRCR, along with ABC News Radio network, America’s largest commercial radio news network, offering national and international news from at the top of the hour. The owners of Alexander Broadcasting, Inc. have decided that the best way to use WRCR’s AM broadcast facility, 1700 on the AM radio dial, is to air Indian-language programming from Radio India for the next 12 months. President of Alexander Broadcasting Dr. Alexander Medakovich said, “Just as newspapers, magazines, music and other forms of communication have been moving to digital delivery formats, we see the future of radio moving in that direction as well. While the golden age of analog, over-the-air radio had an exciting memorable past, the future of regional talk and conversation is currently just as robust and as easily accessible via the Internet and mobile apps and will continue to get even better in the future.” He added, “We look forward to serving our current audience and future listeners with great local, general interest and niche-specific programming.”

When I'm up in NY visiting, I'd be only 10 miles or so from the WRCR transmitting site. I'd always enjoy the music they played but the station really did cause a lot of interference to those frequencies!

I'm disappointed in them and they lost a listener, but as they say, money talks. If I want to ever listen to Indian music, it'll be from All India Radio, not WRCR.

A shame, at least there's plenty more to listen to on the MW and SW bands.
Florida, always listening via my Tecsun PL-660 receiver.

I have them faintly at 2315z with what sounded like Indian bhangra music.  They are about 90 miles west.  As Rockland is where I spent my high school and when not-away-at-college years, I have seen a great deal of change in their local radio.  Including WRKL going to a Polish format which is how/why WRCR decided to fill the local void in an area twenty five miles
northwest of Manhattan.
Tecsun H501x (broadcast received on this unless noted), Zenith T/O G500, Zenith T/O Royal 7000, Emerson AR-176, Zenith 8S154, T/O 7G605 (Bomber), Tecsun PL-600, Tecsun PL-880, Zenith 5S320, Realistic DX 160 using 40 feet of copper wire.  With apologies to Senator Gramm for his thoughts on firearms, "I have more radios than I need but not as many as I want."
