A Perfect (Radio) Ending For The Baseball Season
« on: September 28, 2019, 1154 UTC »
I will generally do multiple DX reports on Fridays during the baseball season.  This year I did just one because of a busy personal schedule and an erratic baseball schedule.  There were multiple days not all teams played on Fridays, numerous rain outs on Fridays early in the season, every other Friday the Cubs play a day game, and yearly reception problems mid-summer.

However, there is an annual feast for the ears that has of late been tough to date but will be this Sunday (Sept. 29), time to be determined.  Having listened to broadcasts for 55 years, I have been blessed to hear some of the greats behind the microphone call a game, a pair are retiring this year - Marty Brennanman and Steve Blass.  However, Red Sox radio voice Joe Castiglione (in Boston since 1983) will continue one of the finest tradition in baseball radio lore.

At the conclusion of the final postgame Red Sox show, Castiglione recites A. Bartlett Giamatti's (late Yale President/father of Paul) delightful "The Green Fields of the Mind ".  https://mason.gmu.edu/~rmatz/giamatti.html

Hearing Castiglione perform it is radio magic.  The Red Sox will start at 1900 utc Sunday, a three hour game would have the post game show start at 2200 utc.  Recently, you could not date the final Red Sox game in advance because of their being in the playoffs. The lone flame throwing Red Sox affiliate WTIC 1080 am Hartford will be broadcasting the Patriots, they have not announced if they will jip the Red Sox game but sometimes they will not even broadcast the post game show.  For those in New England, here is their radio network, if you are from outside the region, I have found that sometimes a board op forgets to cut the baseball broadcast to the internet (especially on the weekend) so streaming is possible: https://www.mlb.com/redsox/schedule/radio-affiliates. A very pleasant listen.

Tecsun H501x (broadcast received on this unless noted), Zenith T/O G500, Zenith T/O Royal 7000, Emerson AR-176, Zenith 8S154, T/O 7G605 (Bomber), Tecsun PL-600, Tecsun PL-880, Zenith 5S320, Realistic DX 160 using 40 feet of copper wire.  With apologies to Senator Gramm for his thoughts on firearms, "I have more radios than I need but not as many as I want."
