End of an era - no more Radio St. Helena
« on: March 14, 2012, 1848 UTC »
Shortwave Central blog reports Radio St. Helena is no more after this year.  (Correction: original report was via Radio Netherlands Worldwide site, relayed by Shortwave Central.)

Unfortunately I missed my chances at that QSL.  Never was able to copy 'em clearly here at home on my own receivers, although I was able to hear the St Helena shortwave broadcasts via web tuners.

As I recall, they were supposed to shut down in the late 90s or thereabouts, but then came back after a few years. I listened to what was supposed to have been their last broadcast then; it was quite a thrill. I even looked into visiting St. Helena, but at the time it would have taken at least a month and probably in excess of $10,000, since they did not have an airport and the only access was by ship.

Perhaps they will return again.

Plus IIRC you weren't allowed to the leave the state?

I think I still have a copy of their broadcast from 1996 when Radio Eurogeek came on just before Radio St. Helena took to the airwaves.  The last few years I didn't have much luck hearing their signal, but they were a fun challenge to dx.
