540 KWMT, IA logged in TX
« on: November 30, 2008, 2326 UTC »
11/30/08, 540, briefly caught KWMT near grey line here in N. Central TX.
2255 UTC: Alan Jackson - Country Boy ("I've got a 4 wheel drive...")
2259z: KWMT ID, Fort Dodge, IA
Faded out by 2301z.
Web data shows they run 5,000 watts daytime, omnidirectional with a bias toward south.
(Magnavox D2935 indoors - again, surprisingly tight Q to null out powerful regional Spanish language station.)
That li'l ol' DXer from Texas
Unpleasant Frequencies Crew
Al: Palstar R30C & various antennae
Snoopy: Sony ICF-2010
Roger: Magnavox D2935
(Off-air recordings.)

12/2/08, 2233 UTC: Same again!  KWMT, farm/ranch market reports, chatter about heifers, several clear KWMT 540 ID's.
2238z: Winter weather advisory ("...currently in Fort Dodge, 37 degrees...")
2239z: Call-in contest for free tickets to game against Oregon.
2240z: C&W style Christmas song.
2242z: ID, can't quite make out announcer's name, sounds like Ron or Bob?
2243z: Merle Haggard song ("Silver Wings"?)
2246z: KWMT ID, into another song, sudden fade out.
Signal hanging in a bit longer than previous days, but with more QRM from regional Spanish language religious station.
(N. Central TX - Magnavox D2935 portable indoors.)

12/3/08, same station, a little earlier each day.  KWMT 540.
2228z: Just drifting in with C&W song (heavy QRM from Spanish language religious station)
2231z: Commercial break (not clear)
2234z: Market reports, mention of crude oil prices, NASDAQ, livestock news
2238z: Catching only a few words here and there, mentions of "Iowa", temperature ("...degrees..."), cattle auctions
2240z: C&W with steel guitar, man singing "...I found Dixie...", "...walk on by..." in lyrics
2243z: ID, "True Country, KWMT 540 AM"
2244z: C&W song, female singer, honky tonk in lyrics ("...I'd go back where I belong...", "...better girls than me..."), much stronger for a minute.
2246z: Sudden fade out
(N. Central TX - Magnavox D2935 portable indoors.)

No luck with KWMT since 12/4/08, the last day I caught 'em (barely).  Tried again after 2200 UTC on Dec. 5-7.  Quirky propagation lately.

Joy.  First positive greyline catch here in Texas of Iowa's KWMT 540 in a few days.  12/9/08, 2212-2219 UTC: woman reading news story with mentions of Senator Tom Daschle; ad for farm tractors and implements; positive KWMT ID's; suddenly faded out at 2219z during what sounded like Connie Francis "Blue Blue Day".  Came back at 2224z with more C&W music.
2248z: Back briefly after long fade out, KWMT ID and "Help Me Make It Through The Night" (sounded like Martina McBride version), then faded out again.

(Weird, I can only catch this station using the Magnavox D2935 and only with the internal loopstick, radio flat on its back and oriented a specific way toward the metal headboard of my bed.  No go with the Sony ICF-2010 and loopstick, or Palstar R30C with fugly loop.)
