UNID Weak carrier 6925 around 0515 UTC
« on: June 08, 2012, 1518 UTC »
A weak carrier faded in on the SDR recording around 0515 UTC, and was gone around 0518. I've noticed such a carrier on several nights usually quite late, as in this case. Indeed, it re-appeard at 0544, and again at 0550 and 0554. Also several times after 0600, the last trace of the carrier was at 0932. Always an extremely weak carrier, never any signs of audio. Oh, wait, almost never any audio. I actually got some audio at 0912 UTC!  Here is the audio: http://www.hfunderpants.com/mypics/UNID6925_0912.mp3

Perhaps anyone else running an overnight recording can check during this time period, and see if they caught anything. Any ops want to take credit for this?

I measured the carrier frequency, and got values between 6925.001431 and 6925.001907 Hz. So we're talking within 2 Hz of 6925, and a drift of less than 1 Hz. Very good frequency stability and accuracy.

The weak nature of the signal and the use of 6925 suggests it is a pirate, the reception time suggests that it is likely on the west coast. At 0932, it is starting to get light here.

What do others think?

Dang, I already deleted my whole overnight recording from this morning, but I'll check future recordings for that time slot to see what I can hear on my end Chris.

The unmodulated carriers were not me but the audio might have been. I've been carrying out a few more tests here to test the antenna installation. Once I start regular broadcasting, I will be using the name "Blue Ocean Radio". I'm waiting for some equipment to arrive but might be able to haywire something together before that. My transmissions are from the west coast of Canada...sorry, can't be more specific than that. Cheers...

My 6925 mystery station was back again last night. Some peaks around 0657z, I could hear audio, but could not pull out an ID. Some more peaks around 0750z.

Here is a recording from around 0750: http://www.hfunderpants.com/mypics/UNID_6925_0750.mp3

9 June 2012

I noted a carrier w/o audio dancing in and out of the SDR demod band between 0453z and 0456z.  This was after Blue Ocean went off and very well may have been part of his test.  I note no other audio in the rest of the overnight MP3 received here last night, FWIW.

I checked the SDR recording again. At 0453, a carrier came on 6925. It had a few shifts in carrier frequency, then drifted down to about 6922 over 20 minutes. It then started to drift back up in frequency, ending up at 6923 at 0513z when the carrier went off. I could not hear any audio, so it was likely some sort of a transmitter test.

I'm not sure if this is the same station or not.

Well, another update to this mystery. I noticed this carrier again on 6925, around 0653 UTC, on the SDR recording. The signal was stronger than usual, so I gave it a listen - and I could clearly hear two stations! So this is some sort of mixing product.

I notice this on 6970 when WWCR is on, so I wonder if this is them, or another domestic SWBC station.
