PLC, (Power Line Communications.), seems to be the more modern term for Carrier-Current Coupling. Power line companies and mining companies still use this a lot for data communications and controlling. And, yes, DSL for internet is doing this as well, and just disrupting the medium wave bands over here. Then again, AM Carrier-Current Coupling is a permissible way to get on radio over here in USA and Canada license-free. One advantage of this method is that the power lines carry the signal to anyone within range that is also on the same power line, with a range anywhere from .5km to several km. However, disadvantages are, no power lines to an area, no coverage. And, power step-down transformers also block medium wave signal. Hey, perks and jerks to everything.
“I am often asked how radio works. Well, you see, wire telegraphy
is like a very long cat. You yank his tail in New York and he
meows in Los Angeles. Do you understand this? Now, radio is
exactly the same, except that there is no cat.”
-Attributed to Albert Einstein, but I ripped it from the latest Splatter .PDF March 2025 issue.
