Equipment / Autek Research QF-1A AM SSB CW Filter Anybody Use One?
« on: December 27, 2013, 1911 UTC »
I bought one of these online a short time ago, and have had fun and frustration going through the "learning curve" of using it. I try and use the manual, and keep re-reading it, but it seems like there is only limited success. Does anyone else use one of these filters? Are there any tricks to using one? My settings always seem to vary, with the Peak, Notch, etc. for the many varied receive modes. I looked on eHam and found some tips by two reviewers.

The manual seems a bit confusing, for my rather limited radio skill set. Could someone break it down for me on how to fine tune this filter?   ...Steve

I was wondering if any listeners out there use these products, and what success you have had with either. I've checked with eHam and other reviews and they both seem to do the job. I already use the MFK 956 for the Kenwood 1000. I used to have the older model of Preamp / tuner by MFJ in the 80's, but remembered it did little but jack up the noise floor. Been stealthing on eBay but don't want to buy both. I use a 30" longwire.

Any imput appreciated ;D RCCI

Equipment / AC In-Line Noise Relief - Tripplite To The Rescue
« on: November 05, 2013, 0103 UTC »
For some time I have battled background noise from a variety of sources within the home office, from the DSL router / modem, to the TV which is about 6 feet away from the TV (usually off) and and other "twitchy" RFI generators in my hovel which other family members use. I have used a variety ferrite cores, etc. with little or no success. The noise floor here averages S5 to sometimes S7. Believe me when I say it's been difficult to catch some of the fainter OP's. Seasoned vets have their own method for dealing with this, and your ideas and stories are welcomed.

But I'll get to the point.

When I was at the local Salvation Army tonight (cheap bastard that I am) I ran into a used 8 outlet Triplitte Internet Security UPS, battery backup, NOISE (I emphasize that word) Protection, and Surge Protection. I paid the 8 bucks (cheap bastard that I am) and brought it home.

I pugged all of the radios, DSL modem, computer....and WOW! the noise floor that was on the average of S5-S7 dropped to an S3-S4  ;D

It was no fluke,...the signal indicator hadn't been that low since I got rid of my my platform shoes in the 70's.   Unbelievable...

There are a few of the Tripplites on eBay at varying prices. It's not a "One Size Fits All" Cure-All / Be-All, but it did help here. I wanted to pass this along to those that may be cursed with the AC noise syndrome that made listening a bit difficult at my QTH. Maybe it can help at yours...

About a year ago, I found two or three websites where I could download full programs of Voice of Laryngitis, Radio Clandestine, Radio Deadman, etc. These were the full 40-50MB programs and not simply brief airchecks. I loaded up a zip drive and then lost it recently. I cannot seem to find the website(s) and would love to download those programs again. Any links appreciated.  ...RCCI

Just visited the FCC website and was greeted by a Skull and Crossbones banner warning of Pirate radio. Hit the Learn More link button, and was served up a nice expose of pirate radio and a number of sub-links from that page. It was kind of interesting reading, thought I'd share. Here is link:

http://www.fcc.gov/encyclopedia/pirate-broadcast-stations

One of the Sub-links is titled "Aggressive Enforcement Actions", which show the most recent bust(s). Interesting to note the action datelines 05/2013 to 10/2013, there appears to be no enforcement between those dates. It's also interesting to note that fairly sizable number of busts emanate from the state of Florida.

Equipment / LF Engineering H-800 Active Antenna - Any Reviews?
« on: October 28, 2013, 0224 UTC »
I've visited the LF Engineering website and notice they offer the titled HF antenna for $159.00 and was wondering if this antenna is worth it. Going to Ebay I always see homebrews being offered, for considerably less. I remember the old Dressler's and other "window sill" mounted antennas of bygone years and was wondering how this one stacks up. Any info appreciated. ...Steve

Spy Numbers / Most Common Frequency Range?
« on: October 26, 2013, 0227 UTC »
I know that Numbers Stations pop up everywhere. Has anyone ever created a chart of the most popular frequency ranges and time periods. I remember the column by Havana Moon from years ago, and heard about that person passing (Can't think of his name). Did he ever create freq. / time analysis, of broadcasts?
